Tomb Under the Tor (New Playtest Report)

I don't like warforged being core. Perhaps it's because I connect them very much with a particular campaign setting, so I don't see them as a general race. If warforged are going to be core now, I'm wondering if any of the other Eberron ideas going to be incorporated into the 4ed PHB?

I think its worth repeating: We dont know what will be in the first three books.

I mean they could be. But I get the very strong impression that they are testing options that may appear in later products.

EDIT: And I am repeating. But I said it was worth it.

Indeed, if the game is going for a lessened focus/importance on alignment, is there really a need for multiple "holy outsider" types?

But they are going to a lot of trouble to distinguish devil and demon...

Well, they have to, if they don't want to just say "devils are LE and demons are CE" and assume that's good enough.

While I'm sure it is mechanically sound, I just don't like the flavor of it for a D&D game - or at least for my D&D games. Immediate counter attacks, second winds, pushy wizard strikes? Just sounds like another game to me.

But then again, I am of the philosophy that "it is all D&D" - so it may just not be my D&D. I hope I get a chance to playtest so I can, 1) know what to expect, 2) be proven wrong, 3) get to give my 2 cents on how this stuff works.

It's also fairly likely they'll be in the Monster Manual, so they could easily be using it from there. Count me among those who don't mind Warforged, per se, but I don't like the idea of them in the core PHB.

The "10-level worth of abilities for races" will advance tiefling and eladrin/aasimar this way:

Tiefling -> Fiendish -> Half-Fiend
Aasimar -> Celestial -> Half-Celestial

I can practically see:

Something -> Draconic -> Half-Dragon
Eh, I hope not. I like the idea of racial progressions such as the racial paragon classes from UA, or abilities themed for a particular race-class combination such as those found in racial substitution levels but I don't like the idea of actually chaging your race. It has it's place as a plot device (Ashardalon becoming a half-fiend, for example) but I don't like it as a generally available option.

Now, if you're just talking about what the abilities might look like, I guess that's OK. But even then, I'm not thrilled with the idea of wings sproutin' out of tieflings' and eladrins' backs. :\

BTW, does anybody else think it's funny that in 3E half-celestial humans are more celestial than celestial humans? :)

Well, if you squint really hard, burning hands could count as a "fiery blast"....

That was my thought. Burning hands or it's successor.

I'm betting that eladrin makes full use of the new racial advancements to become significantly more angelic as it advances. 1st level = current aasimar. 10th level = current eladrin.

Eh. That's like saying a half-elf becomes more and more like an elf as it gains levels.

Well, sorta. Except that you can Raise Dead an elf but not a celestial, which suggests there are some fairly basic differences between elves and celestials, possibly carrying broader implications for the development of their half-blooded progeny.
