Tome of Battle--Setting Sun throws?

Can one use the throwing maneuvers from the Setting Sun school to throw an enemy off a cliff (or into a pit, into acid, etc.)? All of the throwing maneuvers say you have to chuck the guy into an empty square, but I'm unclear as to whether that means "unoccupied, but otherwise safe" or "any square that doesn't have something in it to block the way."

Agreed. Throwing people onto caltrops or through a wall of fire are pretty common uses, I think.

Certainly! You just have to throw them into an unoccupied space. I don't think anyone normally hovers in place out past the edge of a cliff, so it's probably okay! :p

With one of them (Ballista Throw, I think) even that doesn't matter. You can lob a kobold at the hovering wizard. It'll bounce off AND fall into the ravine.

Can you throw a creature straight up from its current square? If so, does it still land prone when it finally hits the ground?

If the square straight above it is unoccupied, why not? It's not as much fun as pitching a guy off the rope bridge into the river of molten rock in which several pit fiends are frolicking innocently below, but sometimes pit fiends deserve their frolics and shouldn't be interrupted.

Depends on your interpretation of square. :)

If you interpret 5 ft. square to mean 5 ft. cube, then yes, so long as the cube above it is unoccupied.

If you interpret 5 ft. square to mean 5 ft. square (infinitely projected upward), then maybe: it might be occupying its own square.

I have a warblade/swordsage/etc who's goal is to throw someone through a Bladebarrier... or two. :p

Well, if your using the higher level maneuver that lets you throw them multiple times, and you have evasion and a good enough reflex save, you could possibly throw them back and forth through the same blade barrier.
