This is mostly directed at those running a SL Game . . .

I just got a look at the Tome of Horrers today. wow - thats a pretty cool book. So I'm wondering what you have used from it in your game? I ran a conversion of a Dungeon mag module featuring a slithering tracker. the set up made it seem as if a vampire was involved (the group was only 1st-2nd level so naturally they were conserned) it was an expirence Im sure that they will remember for quite some time . . .

So what have you used?

So far, only the Nupperibos and the Piercers, sadly. The other creatures are definitely getting play IMC though, especially the extraplanars, because my group is going into the planes(especially the Nine Hells and the Abyss).

Found out that when it comes to Piercers, they're definitely better when your players are fighting something else. I guess I forgot how much they sucked as a normal encounter in 2nd edition.

I've been having a lot of fun with the templates... esp. Dire and Abomination...

I've also used some of the gargoyles, and a demon knight. Been meaning to use some of the others, but havn't got a chance to...

The Tracker mod.

I remember that module. We went through that mini-adventure about ten years ago, when it was first release. It was my first game, (before I ever saw a hint of any DM material), and the appearance of the Slithering Tracker was so damn cool. Great module, wish I had it! Which Dungeon is it in again?

most recently, my players had to defend a village from a party of flinds and two headed trolls who attacked it. Nearly whiped them out too (the party not the monsters).

The ToH has gotten a lot of mileage in My campaign since I've gotten it. More than the MM has to be honest. Most of the creatures in the Monster Manual, besides the classic humaniods and basic Undead, haven't made an appearance IMC.

It was called through the night from issue #29. its a clasic and definately worth the conversion. though its somewhat anticlimatic once they realize its not a vamp.

Nothing yet my Scribe. But I'm sure Half-ogres might come into play in say Termana. Or perhaps Demonic Knights in the Isle of the Dead.

ToH

after reading the half ogre (el3) Orog (el5) and ogrelon (el7) I can't see why anyone would ever play anything but the 1/2 ogre if given a choice between these 3. was this a misprint?

Type-O Demon Fun

I've used the book a good bit the past two sessions. First, a party member was killed by a trapper that had made a home in the local inn. After they raised him, the party went to an inn in the next town (which proudly posted a sign that declared itself "Trapper free for the the past 7 days").

During the night, a gang of slaadi with unusually low intelligence came to the inn, looking to steal food stuffs (cheese and some dried bread the innkeeper had planned to use for croutons). Each slaad carried an interesting weapon, one a large trident with thick tines, another a large mancatcher/pincer device, and the third a wooden mace that emitted a black powder when the head of the mace was turned. After besting several of the slaadi, the party was able to strike up some conversation with them. The slaadi reported that they were seeking to make their lord comfortable and wanted the party ranger to cast speak with plants for them, so they could communicate with their master. It seems that while the slaadi were traveling to this plane, they were separated from their master. They were now seeking out their master in this plane, believing that the master had assumed his true form.

The party agreed to speak with the master of the slaadi. A brass dragon (mock dragon, actually, from CC I) came forward, carrying a large wooden reversed dome on its back. Inside the dome, was a mass of rotting, black vegetation. The party tried to speak with the dragon, but the slaadi corrected them, saying that their lord was inside the bowl on the dragon's back. The party noted their confusion, so the slaadi gave them a copy of an ancient book, the Tome of Horrors, and pointed out how they had discovered their master's true form. There, on page 234 of the book, was the answer. The Slaad Lord of Entropy's true form, a 15-foot tall black salad. Then, the slaadi came forward with their large fork, salad tongs, and pepper grinder and made their master "comfortable".

Sure it took a good four hours to set up the joke, but it was well worth it. The look on the party's faces was priceless. They assured me that this was an adventure that they would remember for a long time.

The Tome of Horrors is a great book, typos and all.

Don't run a SL game, although I feel free to plug what I want from R&R and both CCs... If I achieve to use at least 10% of each of my monster books, I won't feel cheated out of money. For now, I plan to use the dark creepers and stalkers. I discovered these cute critters in this book, and loved them -- although I'll discard the "noone knows what they speak" nonsense in a world with tongues, comprehend languages and Terole's translator. But I'll use the heaps of synonyms borrowed from Forrester's Against the Elves Story Hour.

Other than that; the (rank & file) fiends and celestials, and all feys, mainly. Sand giants maybe, and magical beasts on pair with blink dogs or displacer beasts, like moon dogs, hoar foxes, and kamadan. Inphidians, greater medusa, faery dragons, draug, fire nymph... Those I have places for them IMW. They won't necessarily be met by players, although I'll try, but they exist.

On the other hand, there are several creatures that just don't exist. I won't use half-ogres and co., I don't want to much mixed genetics. Flumph, flail snail, froghemoth and gambado are other examples of things I'm not very keen on using. True gorgons and other unique beings that are too well known to my players to be detached from real-world mythology I'll avoid also.
