Tome of Magic - Using Demon Lords as Vestiges?

They probably did not want to go down the path of bargaining with fiends for powers - all too much like the 80's equating D&D with Devil Worshiping.

Indeed, I considered that as well. It's possible, I suppose, but no less disappointing, for all that.

And then again, FC2 contains rules for pacts with devils, so it's not exactly a taboo subject...

I have no doubt that the choice of using mostly unknown/made-up names for vestiges was very deliberate.

Well, it depends what you mean by "mostly unknown." The Goetia is extremely well known to those who study the occult or occult history--but you're right that it's fairly obscure (with a few names being exceptions) as regards the general populace.

Since I have studied the occult and occult lore and I've never heard of it, I'd say it's not that well known even in those circles. :)

As for the original idea: rock on. Sounds like a cool idea.

Heh. I suppose that's the danger of using "the occult" as a blanket term, when there are so many different areas, practices, beliefs, and cultures to be considered. ;)

I'll rephrase to say that the Goetia is very well known to those who study certain aspects of the occult.

Thank you for all of the replies. :)

I have FC1 and FC2 on order from Amazon which should hopefully make the process significantly less daunting (particularly if they contain information for a system for pacts albeit not the one I'm trying to develop).

I actually proposed just such an article to Dragon, but alas, they weren't interested. :(

A real shame! Are there any insights you'd be happy to share in such as system?

Mouseferatu - did you have the article completed or just as a basic idea? I mean, if Dragon didn't want it perhaps you could post it for download?

As of now, I haven't done more than a few basic ideas. If/when I develop it further, though, I'll be happy to let you folks know. :)
