toning down spellcasters

Well, I use mostly purchased scenarios, which I find makes many changes hard to implement (ie not worth the bother). An alternate might be slower advancement (I already give 1/2 XP) combined with benefits at the midpoint of each XP level. I'm not sure it's necessary though, 1e/2e never needed such things to function with slow advancement & retirement at ca 10th-12th level.

Does it work for you?
As one of S'mon's players I can say that because of the tendency to tactical caution by us, not always though we have had some near TPKs at times (just don't mention Chokers - OK).

It can be tricky with spellcasters as the power curve definitely makes higher levels much more powerful than the other classes - I have recently reviewed Elements of Magic and it does seem to balance the spell casters a bit better against the other classes than the core rules. Possibly in the campaign I GM I'll reduce no of spells per day or fiddle with the rules another way to reduce the power level.

I haven't really had a problem in the current low-level game (Barakus) - the Sleep spell & constant Sleeping of everything with scrolls was bugging me, but Psion recently pointed out to me that it's supposed to be a 1 round casting time/completes next action, we've been running it as standard-action, which makes a big difference (a certain elf wizard would have been squelched several times IMO!) I've suggested to Ravi keeping it standard-action but making the effect 1 hd/level.

Out of all the spells that the casters have in the current campaign I've noticed Sleep being the most imbalancing of them, though I consider Mage Armour to be overpowered compared to Shield of Faith (+4 force bonus compared to +2 deflection (rising by +1 per 6 levels) duration 1 hour/level vs 1 min/level)
