Too Beautiful

I think there would be more of a problem with people wanting to playing just an average guy. Hidiousness gives the character that uniqueness some people like.

Well, fantasy seems to be littered with good looking people, and I suppose the name of the genre says it all.

Have you taken a look at the character portraits of the careers in the new Warhammer Fantasy RPG? Few if any of them are what I would call attractive, and many are downright ugly. But this is entirely in genre...

Plus you get on a "random disfigurement" table for each character where you can get things like missing fingers, broken teeth, and pox marks...

Always beautiful got boring a long time ago. Instead these days I pick prominent features because it is easier to describe: e.g. taunt features, gleaming teeth, sideburns, lazy eyes.

I guess it is difficult to not make the person at least a little bit cool-looking but that doesn't need to mean beautiful, and I don't give any grief if others want their characters to be beautiful. One of my friends loves to make his description as interesting as possible, picture included. To do so he has deliberately made one of his current characters a real lamo, but it works, his character is one of the core personalities.

What I have seen as a habit is to use Charisma as a dump stat, and justify it in having the character being ugly. Myself, I never bother to know if character is beautiful or hideous; they by default are average.

I agree and it is somewhat sad

personally because I like good cha I tend to have my characters average but with notable features - perhaps a brooding stare (a la Solomon Kane), a mischevious grin, brighteyes, ready smile, or even "an alluring set to his weather browned features" (which might be beautiful by another name I suppose )

I played a dwarf ranger that was ugly, smelled bad, only took a bath when he had to cross a river/stream and really didn't do well in social situations (Cha 7). In fact he was fond of the fact that he could scare small children with his hideous appearance. It was kind of entertaining, particularly after playing a rather attractive paladin.

Well, perhaps I do. Several characters I've played have been in my mind's eye less than visually appealing, but I mix it up a bit. There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to visualize vicariously being beefcake/cheesecake; it's the entire raison d'etre for the E! Entertainment channel.
