Too soon to daydream about Heroic-only Campaign?

Yeah I would carry on levelling up (HPs, skills, BaB etc) but only allow the powers to be chosen from the Heroic tier. So you still get more powerful but don't get access to the big (possibly game-breaking) movement and scrying stuff etc

My GAMERS WANTED advertisements usually list that my campaigns go from levels 1-12. That probably won't change for 4e..unless I dig out my D&D master level set and run it up to level 36th! HA! :)

Seriously though, the info they just put out said "Characters will typically have all of their magic item slots filled by level 10." That REALLY put me off.

It also has the possibility of being a very long fight... from what we can tell of the to-hits and damage output on both sides.

If you're willing to burn dailies, it'll actually go pretty fast against a normal. Its hit points aren't _that_ high, and you do half damage even on a miss. The fighter's reliable daily will also hit quite hard.

I did say it would be a bit of a missfest, though, yeah :) And I meant only including normals for that high level, obviously :)

It might be interesting to have a campaign feature, say, 3 individual groups of characters, each group advancing to 10th level and then retiring into the "movers and shakers" NPCs of the campaign setting.

Then perhaps some delving into paragon level play drawing from this pool of established heroes.

Great idea! That seriously is worth its own thread. The level of player buy in would be pretty big I bet, and it could probably be accomplished in a year of gaming real time (assuming 2 sessions a month). Year 2 would be the paragon crisis.

In someone's 4e blog (A WoTC DM) he threw a level 19 Angel of Vengeance (an elite, admittedly) against his 10th level PCs. He quickly had to call in reinforcement after reinforcement just to keep the PCs from being utterly annhilated. (What you and I would probably call bad DMing, but excusable since he was playtesting an entirely new system). Let me find that link.

Here it is, reposted right here on enworld. http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=222558 This is part 2, there is also a part 1 at his actual blog.

Yep - there were two problems. One, it was elite - so it had a lot more hit points and was quite a bit ahead of their expected xp value (like double a normal encounter) _and_ it had resistances against a bunch of their damage.

Resistances can make things quite a bit tougher.

Of course, there's always the option to run away... :p

And then, plan your revenge carefully for the next time around. :]

So I wonder if I should start building a campaign setting based on the assumption that lvl 10 is a good as it gets, or just wait and see how the game plays.

I can't believe no one has done this yet.

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most campaign go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's better? Is it any better?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one better, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your character. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One better.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten better and make ten be the top number and make that a little better?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

What about it put you off? I don't understand this comment. I could try to rebut, but I don't know what exactly you are complaining about. Too fast? Too slow? Existence of magic items at all? Of slots?
