In my 1E and 2E games, the PCs were often happy to have a +1 short sword at 5th level -- just for those rare monsters that required magic to hit them. The need for silver to hurt werewolves was relevant for most of the campaign. By 10th level, there might be two magic weapons, a suit of magic armor, and a handful of other magic toys (wands, staves, gauntlets, etc.) between all 5-7 PCs. Most of the PCs had 2-3 items, ever.Hussar said:Your 10th level parties, in any edition, didn't have seven or ten magic items each? Really?
I know I ran an (intentionally) lower magic game than standard. It was possible, though. In 3e, I gave up by 3rd or 4th level. There were just too many wonky balance assumptions with everything else.
I don't care if others want magic Wal-Marts in their game. I'm happy, though, that it looks like 4e will handle a wider range than 3e.
