Top 50 Sci-Fi Shows per Boston Globe

Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Someone wasn't paying attention during Sci classes at high school.
Buffy has robots, electroblasters, and other super-science stuff in it. Now, classifying Xena as a sci-fi show, that's pushing it (unless you count some of the clip shows - I know at least one of them was centered on a bunch of modern-day geeks trying to clone Xena and Gab).

No nod to Farscape? Buffy with no nod to Angel? Neither is really sci-fi anyway but if they are putting stuff like Tales from the Crypt in there as sci-fi. And I don't really consider super-hero shows sci-fi but I guess the writer did.

But leaving out Farscape & DS9 is criminal.

There's 24 pages of responses at the site, too. I'm not going to read them all but it seems that people range from "this is okay" to "this list sucks."

It's not a sci-fi list; it's a "speculative fiction" list. Which, I guess, could abbreviate to "sci-fi" if you have a very strange abbreviation algorhithm....

Jetsons ahead of Buffy? Andromeda ahead of anything?! And no Kolchak: The Night Stalker? Bah!!!! They mention the Logan's Run t.v. show without mentioning the novel or movie which came before it. Maybe the writer didn't know it was a movie first....

But I did like the inclusion of some very old shows ("Sci Fi Theater") on the list.

I think the original Twilight Zone deserves the #1 or 2 spot, though, no matter how much I love the new BSG and classic Trek.

Agreed. About "Twilight Zone" needing to be higher. No love of ST:TOS (except for a few episodes) or the new BSG (or even the old one) for me.

Time for me to get flamed...

I take issue with the first Star Trek grabbing the #1 spot. Just because a show was an original that paved the way doesn't make it the best. I point to LotR (the books) as an example. It may have started a literary genre, but it isn't the best in it. Same with Star Trek.

Oh well.

To fix this list, and make it make sense would require the following:

1. Purge the superhero shows. Superhero shows are not science fiction, even if they have fantastic elements or magic masquerading as super-science. And yes, Xena is a superhero show, and should be purged.

2. Purge the bad sitcoms that have science fiction trappings (like Third Rock from the Sun). Those aren't science fiction, they are sitcoms (and for Third Rock from the Sun, pretty bland formulaic sitcoms at that).

3. Purge the spy shows for the most part. Something like Wild, Wild West might stay due to the extreme reliance on gadgets, but for the most part gadgets aren't science fiction.

5. Add the actual science fiction shows that got overlooked - Farscape, Deep Space 9, and so on.

I would argue Wild, Wild West counts as Spy-fi, not sci-fi. Other Spy-fi shows include:

Mission: Impossible
The Man (Woman, Third-cousin) from U.N.C.L.E.
Get Smart
Alias

Possibly "I Spy" and "The Avengers" are included, though I've never actually watched them.

If I had to add shows to the top 50 list, they would include DS9, Red Dwarf, Farscape, SeaQuest DSV, The Outer Limits, Space: Above and Beyond, and The Invaders.

BTW: tv.com lists their top rated (9.0 or 9.1 out of 10) sci-fi shows as:

Firefly
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Stargate SG-1
The X-Files
Farscape
Battlestar Galactica (new)
Stargate Atlantis
Star Trek: The Next Generation
The Twilight Zone
Babylon 5
Doctor Who

Pets & Sidekicks
