Touch AC and Mounted Combat

I have looked around and can't find this section in the books....

What happens to your AC when you are mounted? Do you lose your DEX bonus? Can you use the Dodge feat?

Last night we fought a Drow Priestess riding a Nightmare and her touch AC was in the 20s. That seemed extreme to me.

I think that's because being mounted doesn't effect your AC at all. If you have the mounted combat feat, it sort of (but not exactly) effects the AC of your mount, but that's about it.

As Frank says.

A rule of thumb is that for things like mounted combat, unless it says that you can't do something, you should be able to do what you can while on your feet (except maybe for picking things of the ground). So DEX and Dodge bonuses allowed. (Also check with the DM ;) )

As for the AC, any deflection bonus is included in touch AC. Other possibles are (Frank or someone will correct me if I am wrong) any bonus that is not armour, natural armour, sheilds so luck, dodge (and multiple dodge) morale etc can be included in touch AC. It is just harder to do, is all.

The easiest way the drow priestess would improve her touch AC, and the way my cleric does it (who has a Dex of 11), is to use shield of faith and combat expertise. It also helps when the party wizard casts mass cat's grace and extended haste regularly, but potions would also work.

I recall getting really annoyed once with a DM who ruled my rogue couldn't use Evasion while mounted :)

More bizarre, I'm playing a ranger/beastmaster, riding my horse animal companion. We got caught in a green dragon's breath weapon, and I took damage, but my horse with evasion didn't.

That was right neighborly of you to bodyguard your mount like that!

Thanks for the help, all.

I do not dispute that is entirely possible to get a touch AC of that high, especially when able to prepare and buff up all day before attacking (which she was able to do).

It just seems odd to me that being mounted doesn't affect your AC.

Fortunately lots of Ice Storms let me ignore all that pesky to-hit and saving-throw business.
