Tournament Tactics!

Ok folks, it Con season, and I though I'd put a hook out there to you all asking for some friendly tips, and tactics you might have used in the past for tournament games.

I have several tournies coming up, and I'd like to be "fully armed" with some good tournament tactics.

Hmm. I would love to tell you the tactics... I just can't.

I have won the Open, the "Special" ( a team advancement tourney they run every 3rd year or so) and the NASCRAG (last year in fact). I have also been on teams that placed highly but didn't quite win.

I will be competing in the Open and the NASCRAG this year, and I go to win!

Good luck though!

P.S. Just plug for the NASCRAG. If you are tired of the pure B&@@$%&! that they put you through at the OPEN, (you veterans know exactly what I am talking about) then head over to the NASCRAG tourney. It is without a doubt the MOST fun I have ever had playing D&D.

Just my nickle's worth.

1. Crush your enemies.
2. See them driven before you.
3. Hear the lamention of the women.

I hope this helps.

Having gamed with your team before is a big help -- and even if you don't win, at least you get a good game with friends out of it. ;)

If you are going for individual advancement, the best advice I ever got was to make sure you spend at least 2 minutes talking with each other player in character.
Just this one bit of advice has gotten me through the opening round every time. I love playing in the later rounds as every person at the table is considererd a good roleplayer by their peers.

I hate the team games - I have never had a good experaice with it and more often than not were the worst I played at the con.

Feh! Roleplaying!?!?!?! Are you nuts? This is tourney play, mister, the REAL KIND. Pure hack and slash in the true Knights of the Dinner Table style! So far, with the exception of the excellent Conan quote, which happens to be a fave of mine, I have not seen any real gems of wisdom yet.

I remember there being a convention article in one of the Dragon mags from the 80's (and somewhere in the 70's issue-wise, IIRC) that had a discussion on this. It basically boiled down to 2 things:

1. ID the timewasters and bypass them whenever possible.
2. Manage the heck out of your resources (the old boxer analogy - the punch that will only sting early on will knock you out later).

It also had some other stuff (the basics really), like choose a party leader early on and then follow that leader, and "do something," even if you're unsure if you are right.

That's the strategy Cthulhu's Librarian, myself, and our stalwart compatriots intend to follow to the DCC Tourney championship.
