So in some ways it is actually too slow to be of use in one to one combat as your opponent at 5' distance can always 5' step to a point from which they can attack you?
So your move, you hit them and place the shield, their move they step round it and hit you

I am also thinking of a possible tactic
Say I ready my attack for when my opponent steps round my shield. He moves, I hit him, do I then get my free action to re-position the shield after he has moved but before he has attacked?
Another possibility is bull-rushing. If I set the shield to 90% cover can I bull-rush as if the shield were not there. It isn't really a wall, it's a piece of my equipment. Visualising it as a LARP tactic it seems to me this would work and would deny the AOO.
