Ok, just checked out the archetype... and it seems pretty straight forward. By level 5 you are pretty much ignoring all the drawbacks of the shield and netting a nice +2 AC bonus compared to a regular sword-and board type.
The thing is that you won't be able to do a lot of damage since you can't shield-bash with it.
So my advice is to go tripper. Take the trip feats and the step-up chain and concentrate on your knockdowns. Martial weapon-wise, Flail is one-handed and has trip. As for exotic weapons, you have the Nine-Section Whip and the temple sword... so... I say take the Flair!
The Race is a bit tricky. You want STR to hit and deal some damage and you need 13 INT for your trip feats. 15 point-buy doesn't leave too many options. I would go Human (for the bonus feat) with these stats.

That's rounded up and nice. With a 20 point buy I would increase CON and WIS a bit.
Starting feats could be Combat expertise, Improved trip and Step Up (ignore Step up for now if you are not going human). Further on, Shield Focus and Missile shield make a nice combo, Weapon focus and the rest of the Trip chain make you more effective on your role. Weapon Specialization helps with the damage output and the rest of the Step-up chain makes you extra-annoying to deal with.
