It's also worth noting that Returns was crap.

Superman as peeping tom
Lex Luthor with yet another evil plot based on cornering the real estate market
Yet another airplane catch

I didn't like that movie much either, but the airplane sequence was astonishingly good.

Superman Returns skipped the origin story. How'd that work out?

We're not talking about a spider-man situation (remake too soon) here.

Personally I rather liked this trailer. A different tone than any of the superhero movies out there.

Superman Returns was essentially an alternate reality sequel to Superman 2 but written with the premise that after Superman mind wiped Louis he decided to bug out before he discovered whether or not he impregnated her as Clark Kent.

The fact that Superman broke the Wheaton rule and became a deadbeat dad while recycling the plot from every previous superman movie made it worthy of its bad reviews.

I think its safe to assume that most people already know Superman's origin story or know enough about Superman not to care

It could just be a 3 min montage or narration at the start. That way they can just get on with things.

I agree.

My philosophy with any of these super hero movies, especially for well known characters like batman, superman or spider man is this:
each hero gets ONE origin film
each movie must "mostly" fit within the existing movies. For example, Hulk2 did not horribly contradict Hulk1. Whereas Spiderman4 basically threw out Spiderman1-3

Here's why:
1) we all know these guy's backgrounds because they are 50+ year old characters.
2) people just want to see another story, not a rehash. They want to imagine that all these movies at least fit together if watched, without having the verisimilitude of knowing that this was a reboot.

Notice how James Bond has been doing this successfully for about 50 years. Excluding the new films*, they're not exactly serial, but they also don't really contradict past films by starting over.
*haven't seen the latest bond film, but the last Daniel Craig as Bond film clearly followed onto Casino Royale, which unfortunately, was a remake.

Why unfortunately? It's not like the new Casino Royale bears the slightest resemblance to the previous one, which in turn bears little resemblance to the original story.

I completely disagree. We're forever bound to the vision of a director who made a film nearly 40 years ago? Superman: The Movie (the last movie featuring a Superman origin story) was in 1978! For a 10 year old kid today, that's 30 years before he was even born. Why should he have to be familiar with some (to him) ancient film? And why should a modern director have to be restricted by it?

Nah, I'm totally fine with new people with new visions doing their thing as best they can. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't.

I dont mind reboots provided enough time has passed, but stop telling us origins we already know.

When they include the origin its always 1 hour+ of setup and the character deciding whether to become the hero, when most people just want to see Spider-Man being Spider-Man.

Looking at the animated tv shows most of the ones I've seen just start with the hero on the job and narrate or quickly flashback the origin in a later episode. I Prefer that.

I found the trailer rather dull and full of angst. I am hoping that the movie won't be like this. Put me in the group with no we don't need another origin story? I think most people including ten year old kids are familiar enough with it and if in doubt then spend as little as possible with the origin and get on with it.
