yep, he steps in to help the girl and takes a Karate stance...they say something on the lines of "what do we have here, the Karate Kid" they proceed to kick his ass.

So, then what's all the nerd rage about?

He's a kid going to a new place, knows a little Karate, and gets teased about it. He gets his butt kicked and then a simple-living man steps in and shows him how to defend himself. His new instructor shows him the hard work, honor and technique of his culture's martial art in an unorthodox manner, and along the way he enters a competition to show up the bad kid, show respect to the martial art and get the girl.

Sounds a LOT like the Karate Kid of my day, the themes all in place, but with the details changed up.

The 2nd trailer looks great, it has a serious (re: not cheesy) tone, and I think Jackie Chan will honor Pat Morita's legacy with his character.

This isn't Danny and Mr Miyagi... It's a "Karate Kid" movie for this generation. Nothing wrong with that.

Can't that be said about any martial film? Even the orginal doesn't go into the history or the philosphy. I doubt any 2 hour movie could.

The original and sequel DO in fact talk about the history.

Mr. Miyagi: In Okinawa, all Miyagi know two things: fish and karate. Karate come from China, sixteenth century, called te, "hand". Hundred year later, Miyagi ancestor bring to Okinawa, call karate. "empty hand".

Daniel LaRusso: I always thought it came from Buddhist temples and stuff like that.

Mr. Miyagi: You too much TV.

Just saw the second trailer, and it didn't do anything for me. :(

There are just some movies that shouldn't be touched (re-done).

I'm just too much of a (original) Karate Kid fan. It's like sacrilige to me.

And I still don't think the name fits the theme of the movie. Sure, the bully calls him a "karate kid" as an insult. Almost as if the original karate kid movie is "known" in this setting, and he uses it as a reference for the insult.

Oh well, just my personal pet peeve. I think I will watch the original the day this movie hits theaters, just in spite :p
