[Trailer] Underworld: Rise of the Lycans

The two supporrting characters of Viktor and Lucian ended up being the best thing about the original Underworld. I know the producers of the movie must have been shaking their heads at the end of watching the first movie before it was released. I can imagine the discussion between the producers at sony Pictures and Danny McBride, the writer of the original movie.

*******************

Producers: "Michael Sheen as that Lucian fellow was the best actor in the whole damn movie wasn't he?"

Writer: "Yes he was".

Producers: "Explain to us again just why you just killed off our best character in the franchise?"

Writer: "Uhm... You hired me to write your script so that's what I did. When we started on this thing... the role had not been cast. Nobody thought Lucian would work out so convincingly."

"But hey, Michael Sheen isn't the whole movie. Bill Nighy as the head vampire dood, he was pretty damned kick ass!"

Producers: "Yes. And you just killed him off too."

Writer: "Uhm...yeah. Well, I have some ideas for where to take this thing, if you'll permit me".

>>Ten Minutes Later<<

Producers: "A period movie. Do you have any idea how much more that will cost to shoot!??!! No way."

Writer: "CGI. Czech Republic. Hell - shoot in Romania. We'll make jokes about it being "shot on location" during the press junkets. We'll make do."

Producers: "It's pretty hard to justify all the tight rubber body suits on Kate Beckinsale's a$$ in the year 1400."

Writer: "I'll make it work. Trust me."

*******************

A chance to revisit all of this? In a Middle Ages setting? Hey - simply put: I'm there in the theatres for this one on opening weekend.

And there are few enough movies that motivate me to say that these days. This is one of them.

So, the plan is to tell us a story we more-or-less already know?

Well, I guess the lack of firearms will help alleviate the rather one-sided battles between vamps and wolves. Then again, it was stated at the start of Underworld that it was only recently that the Lycans learned to morph at-will instead of waiting for a full moon.

The number 1 reason why I hate prequels or any movie set before the previous movies. Underworld without the great gunplay is not underworld.

Actually, I believe you mean Rhona Mitra. Watched the trailer and first thing I noticed was that the lead girl WASN'T Kate Beckinsale.

Nah, I meant what I said. It was a spoof on the producers/writer discussing a sequel of the orginal Underworld back in 2003.

But, yeah, no Beckinsale in this one; different female lead as required by the story Of Lucian and Viktor's daughter, Sonja.

That's ok. I liked Beckinsale, but there was really nowhere left to go with either Selene or with Michael Corvin, uber hybrids.

Lucian and Viktor, otoh, is all to the good.

Unfortunately, it looks like they have decided to bring back Shane Brolly to reprise his Kraven character - which was the one single character that I felt DID NOT work in the original Underworld. I hope Kraven has a bit part in Rise of the Lycans and does not prove to be a distraction.

The return of Lucian and Viktor is the best thing about this new movie. Especially Lucian, even though he was on only sometimes I felt he gave a much better feel/voice for the werewolves then any of the others that well to be blunt were basically cannon-fodder *mumbles to self about werewolves should kick more ass*.

I wonder if they will explain how a Vampire Stronghold could have been built in a remote area and be sustainable without a large large local human population (to act as cattle, laborers, etc). After all, the vamps have to feed off something and those werewolf laborers have to feed on livestock/produce and letting werewolf slaves work in the daytime unsupervised is definitely out of the question since they will kill their masters...
