Training resources for new players

I am looking to start a monthly training session for new players. Does anyone have recommendations for handouts that explain the basics very simply for new players: especially young ones? Also recommendations for a great training scenario?

What are you training? How combat works, how basic rolls work, how to roleplay, what?

If two or more, I recommend to break up training sessions so they cover one thing.

I like Orcfest by Fast Forward Entertainment. It is 3.0, but easily updated (orcs aren't that differnet between editions!). It lets things progress easily, explains new rules as they are needed, and gives a good explanation for first time players and DM's alike. I started three groups with it, and all of them had a great time and learned quickly.

I organize a group of 50 people who have an intrest in DnD. A few of them just have an intrest in learning about the game and have never played. Other members are die hard players but have friends, children, or spouses that would like to learn. What I am looking for is materials to help teach the basics of the game so that a person can decide if they want to learn more about it. Something similar to the Adventure Game material that WotC puts out as a boxed set. It would need to teach the basics of using their skills, combat, a little roleplaying, etc. If they have enough intrest after that session we would set up more sessions where they would learn more of the rules.

Is there anything wrong with using the D&D Basic Game?

Cheers!

After running a 3.0/3.5 game last year and not knowing the system myself there are several things I'd do.

1) Character Creation

2) Quick and easy combat

3) The importance of the 5' step

4) grappling, tripping, disarming and other fun combat maneuvers

5) roleplaying your way out of a combat

6) creative use of spells

7) Advanced Character creation, the Character Concept.
