I thought up this spell a while ago, it seems pretty standard but it needs some tweeking me thinks. Anyway heres the spell, tell me what you think.

Transubstantiation
Transmutation
Level: Sor/wiz 5
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Two objects of up to 1 cu. ft./level
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None (object)
Spell Resistance: No

This spell swaps the basic material of two objects.

The caster pick two objects that contain primarily a single type of material, and are of roughly the same volume. Both objects together can be no larger than 1 cubic foot per caster level. Once touched, the objects exchange material types without changing size or shape.

Magical items are unaffected by this spell.

For example, casting transubstantiation on a wooden shield and a steel longsword would result in a steel shield and a wooden sword.

Material component: A single dried cocoon.

That spell is overpowered. But if that is a dig at the name, my collins dictionary says that it is a substatial change (second meaning). :p

It's a bit of a dig.

Personally, I'd name the spell Polymorph Object (in theme with Animate Object and Polymorph Any Object), and I'd put in strict value rules about transmuting lead to gold (or hay to gold cloth, or coal to diamonds, etc.).

Poly Any Object has rules like that. Check out what's been done already.

Also, there's no way that I'd allow it to be lower level than Rock to Mud.

that spell is both to weak and too powerful.
its level 5 and there is very little use for it.
on the other hand, you could use this spell to turn usless stuff into very expensive gems and metals.
think about turning a wooden dagger into a mithril dagger.
or, you could a turn big chunk of ice into a big chunk of daimond.

It isn't worded well buy I wanted it to be so you had to have two objects (A lump of mithral and a wooden dagger) and you swap them.

You have to have the object first, no turning lead to gold but lead coins to gold, and gold bricks to lead.

How does "Switches the materials of two objects of no larger then 1 cubic foot/ two levels each" sound?

Alright, I get it now. First, change your Target to...

"Target: Two objects of up to 1 cu. ft./level"

Next, we reword the spell description thusly...

"This spell swaps the basic material of two objects.

Pick two objects that contain primarily a single type of material. Both objects together can be no larger than 1 cubic foot per caster level, and the two objects must be approximately the same size. Once touched, the objects exchange material types without changing size or shape.

Magical items are unaffected by this spell.

For example, casting transubstantiation on a wooden shield and a longsword would result in a steel shield and a wooden sword."

Ah, that is interesting.

Suggestion: "Both objects must be of roughly the same volume." -- so you can't take one gold coin and make a cubic brick of gold.

Otherwise, very interesting spell idea.

it sure makes much more sense when you put it this way
