Traps and Locks without (too much) rogue

A Human Paragon/Scout would also work without Able Learner because of the Human Paragon's Adaptive Learning class feature, which turns one class skill into a class skill for all classes you have. :)

The Able Learner idea was more, if you wanted to go Fighter or whatever else, so you could just pick up one level each of Human Paragon and Scout and still be able to max out Search, Disable Device and whatnot (decent Int (14+) required, of course, to actually get some skill points to use with that).

That's definitely answered the question!

1 class level and a feat.
Or
2 class levels

Thanks Thanee!

Nick, dead right! Think that 3 casters/1 melee guy thing we've got going on can't last for ever... and the dragon has got me worried - Wonder if it's going to be the full on Draconomicon Pandora's box of horrors... Never did like raising much. :D

A human paragon / scout / dervish could be a very nasty build. The dervish dance combines nicely with the scout's skirmish ability.

You would want to take scimitar for your martial weapon as a human paragon since the scout gets a very limited selection of non-simple weapons and scimitar is not one of them.

You've already indicated you'll want disable device as your adaptive learning but you'll also want to make sure you take perform (dance) as a paragon to qualify for dervish. The duration of the dervish dance is determined by the ranks in perform (dance) so you'll want to jack that up as much as possible once you take dervish.

At 16th level, I would probably end up with something like this:

Human Paragon 1 / Scout 7 / Dervish 8

With levels, human bonus, and scout bonus you have 8 feats to fill and only require Combat Reflexes, Dodge, Mobility, and Weapon Focus (1 slashing weapon - suggested scimitar). Dervish gives Spring Attack as a bonus at 3rd level so no need to spend a feat on it.

Other abilities you gain are trapfinding, uncanny dodge, evasion, trackless step, flawless stride, battle fortitude (+1 fort save +1 init), skirmish +2d6 +2AC, fast movement +15, movement mastery, dervish dance 4/day, dance of death (cleave while dancing), improved reaction (+2 init), elaborate parry and the ability to use a scimitar as a light weapon if you wanted to take two weapon fighting.

I was thinking on taking a level of rogue, since that would give you trapfinding and the ability to have ranks in search, disable device and pick lock equal to your character level +3 -now you only need a high Int, many class skill points, or both-

But seriously, you only need a wand of Summon Monster I to find traps, and a wand of Melf´s Acid Arrow to pick locks.

Or should that be rouge. :D

An exercise for a character I was contemplating.

Lets supose you're trying to build a traps and locks expert. But don't want to play a full class rogue. Obviously, want very high Search and Disable Device... Can't rely on magic for this - anti magic fields abound.

The character should have a useful primary role. Ideally some ability to melee with huge, powerful monsters and/or undead. Preferably without dying. :)

How would you do this?

The crunchy stuff: 16th level, DMG wealth and these stats - 16, 15, 14, 14, 12, 9. 3.5 Core rules + complete books.

Book of Exalted Deeds is available, but even typing it's name makes me feel kinda cheesy.

Aw geez man, yer not thinking of swapping out AGAIN are ye!!!?

Just read the entirety of the thread; if it comes down to it..........

Paragon/Scout/Dervish/Tempest...............is a sick monkey!

Nah! Just in case of perma death. Figure it's a possibility... Like to have something waiting in the wings just in case. Quite happy with Davion, just prepping for the worst case...

Had this idea knocking around in my head and wanted to flesh it out a little. :)

Dracomeander - nice build! Thanks!

2 weapons would be tempting, 4 feats ought to do it, although it won't leave a lot else over... very nice selection of special abilities though!
