Traveller D20 Spotted in Stores!!!

I have to say I still wonder why it was made a d20 game rather than a standalone OGL game.

Probably because some editions of Traveller have tanked in the past decade (the only really successful one was for GURPS), so they wanted to hedge the bet with the d20 imprint.

There is -no way- that it took you an hour to roll your character before dying. 5 minutes tops. The survival roll was one of the best things about Traveller character generation rules. It was almost a game within itself.

Naw, it's not that hard to do. Way back, using only the 3 original black books, my group could spend that much time rolling up a character for Traveller - only to watch them die. That was where the real tension came from in the game...

I've preordered a copy, so this means I should have it soon. Yipee! We played our second session of T20 last night, using the lite rules PDF. One of the characters nearly did die during character creation, but survived by the skin of his teeth. Another character was dishonorably discharged from the scouts in her second term. And my character, well, she has her very own shiny, new scout ship! Well, ok. It's 20 years old and extremely beat up. And there's a real funky smell coming from the stores locker. But she's all mine. I named her the Busted Flush.

I think this game is going to be great.:)

I have been waiting so very long for this to be published. I have pre-ordered and now will not be one of the first to have it in my grubby little paws.

Admittedly it is going to be a while before it reaches stores up here. So maybe I will be one of the first in Anchorage to have it. :)

Now, I guess that I have to start trying to convince my players to try it out. Hmm, perhaps bribery is in order here.

Sorry, I don't really have anything to add to the discussion. I just wanted to rant.

Thanks!
Well, at least I'm not the only one whose holiday weekend is spoiled by the absence of a T20 (pre-ordered) showing up in the mailbox. Misery loves company.

Besides that, I have yet to hear one whining voice here about the book being too expensive.

And yes, it could have been made as a standalone game but the publisher (QuikLink) want to capitalize their market on d20 audience.

Er, not quite. No edition of Traveller has come close to the numbers that Classic Traveller sold during its run, but none have 'tanked' as you put it. Not unless selling a few tens of thousands of copies qualifies. If that is the definition of 'tanking', I hope we do!

As far as hedging our bets by going d20, that is kind of the purpose of it. Having the d20 logo on the product will make it of more interest to a larger established base of fans than merely publishing it as OGL or if we had published it without using either.

Whilst I did not have the spare $$'s to obtain it today, I had the opportunity to flip through what looks like one of the most nicely laid out D20 book to date. It definitely has the "Travelleresque" quality of previous books. The interior artwork is first rate, the color plates are outstanding as well! The firearm pics are once again fantastic...always are from the Traveller guys. Read through someof the rules, feats, skills and such, and everything looked like the writers really "grokked" the D20 system.

I am looking forward to going back money in hand, and taking this book home with me!

Later!

Thanks NeghVar! We were wondering if some copies might make it into stores this weekend. Glad to see you liked it and are planning to pick up a copy!

Can you die during character creation? It's not really Traveller unless you can die in your career path :p

LOL! No, we actually pulled that out. You can get mangled and/or dishonorable discharged during prior history but you won't die.

On preorders:

Unfortunately even though our stocks were shipped out at the same time as those to the distributors, ours are not scheduled to arrive until Monday. As soon as we get them in we will begin processing the preorders get em our the door.

That's ok RPG. I can wait a a bit longer, I'm sure.

And for the record, I'm glad you used D20. I would have been playing regardless, but my hubby really doesn't want to have to learn another rules set. This means we can play together. And we're both loving it.

I wasn't criticizing the notion of "hedging the bet" with d20. I think it's a smart move, and is, indeed, one of the purposes of it.

As I recall - maybe incorrectly - Marc Miller's Traveller that came out a few years back sold poorly enough that not all the books planned were published.
