I have no problem with the amount magic items the characters acquire throughout their adventuring career.
I have some big issues with how much treasure the characters get as they level. They get like a bazillion gold pieces!!!
Now, I know 4e isn't about simulation, but plausible in its own context would be really nice... For instance Conan collects immense treasures in just about every book, but he can spend it in a short time on food, drink and women. Thats the amount of treasure I want the characters to have access to.
I think I will just skip the part where magic items are bought/sold for money and reduce the amount of treasure the players can lay their grubby little fingers on.
Now I am wondering how much treasure I should give out. I am only planning on running a campaign from level 1-20, skipping epic altogether.
Prices I found to be looking OK:
Plate armor 50gp
Fine clothing 30gp
Longsword 15gp
Holy symbol 10gp
Lantern 7gp
Grappling hook 1gp
Inn stay 5sp
Common meal 2sp
So, if you stayed at a inn and ate 3 meals a day for a full year, it would cost: 365*(11sp) = 400 gold.
According to the DMG you get 720gp over 10 encounters at level 1. This actually looks good with me. Yeah, you have risked your life 10 times and now you can sit on your ass for a while, but not too long, so you have to risk your life again.
If I just increase the amount of gold they get each level by 300 they will really be wealthy in the end, but not completely insanely rich. I would have to change the cost of rituals as well, but that is about it. (since there aren't any magic item sellers/buyers)
800 (level 1)
1100
1400
1700
2000 (level 5)
2300
2600
2900
3200
3500 (level 10)
3800
4100
4400
4700
5000 (level 15)
5300
5600
5900
6200
6500 (level 20)
The campaign I am running will hopefully let the characters run a small with about three towns and the countryside around it, so I expect they will use their money there.
So, what do people think? Is this doable? Any suggestions are welcome
