I haven't actually written one down at all but I've got the basis in my head. Basically it's involved remembering that there's a lot of wilderness land about and removing the things we think of as top predators (mainly wolves and the big cats) - at least in those areas where there's something else to take their place.

For example in the forested foothills area the PCs are in the top predators are giant spiders. There aren't any wolves at all around here despite it being an area that wolves would normally do well in - because they can't compete with the spiders. There will be wolves in other parts of the world though.

The difficulty with developing a full on food chain is the sheer number of D&D creatures that would rank as top or near top predators. OK there's always dragons right at the top and you could suspend the need to explain the aberrations - afterall they're aberrations. But that still leaves lots of big carnivourous things out there to fit together. I suppose I should try it sometime but it's finding the time that is difficult.
