D&D 5E Tricks and tips with magical items.

I remember a campaign (2e) where one character had a magic ring that always had a 5th level spell in it. One grand fight the PC was alone and in a bind looking for something to use. He used the spell to escape a grapple and was running away from the giants looking for something else to use. Another spell popped into the ring that was useful. He must have gone through 5 spells before the rest of the PCs came to assist. It was memorable.

The Folding Bolt is always good for some ridiculous shenanigans until the DM gets tired of it and says it breaks.

Things like getting above your opponent and opening the boat to full size and letting it drop. Unfolding it inside a tunnel or corridor so that it fills (or mostly fills) the passage. Bracing it against a wall and unfolding it so that it acts as an impromptu battering ram.

All of this relies on the DM being on board with it, because the item description covers none of these options. :)

Same with the Figurine of Wondrous Power that turns into an elephant.

We had a Wizard that had reincarnated into a Giant Eagle. (Yes, we play 'weird'). One of our outdoor battle tactics was for him to be flying, invisible, and dive-bomb with that in his claws - and say the code word as he peeled up like a Stukka dive-bomber.

SPLAT.

I think a brave Moon Druid could probably pull it off all by him/herself.

I Illusion'ed my Ranger/Rogue (Arcane Trickster) to look like the bad guys' Executive Officer, walked into the Boss' office with the rest of my 'captured' group in tow, and started a 'who's in charge?' quarrel with him. When the Illusion came down was the group's signal to attack.

We tried something similar in LMoP, to disguise one of the party as a hobgoblin, bringing prisoners into Cragmaw Castle.
We also used it to create the image of a goblin to lure others in through a door. We pushed it a bit too far and this then led is into a discussion about the power of the Minor Illusion cantrip. I *think* we decided that the illusion can't move - so a person would walk out from under it. The more powerful illusion spells allow the image to move and make sounds.
