Trip question

melonneko

First Post
in the players handbook, trip simply says make a melee touch attack, which suggests it can be done with any weapon. However, in the weapon descriptions some weapons specifically say they can be used to trip. So, is a normal trip an unarmed melee strike that only certain weapons can be used with? and if so, would it then provoke an attack of opportunity?

thanks

It seems that any weapon can be used for a trip attack. However, certain weapons can be dropped on the counter trip if you fail.

hmm, okay. the weapon descriptions are worded stupidly then. and im not sure how you trip with a punch dagger (among other things) but i guess it keeps it simple.

I agree. But the rules do seem to support you can trip with anything. Personally, I play it by ear and use my DM's descretion as with everything that happens in a game.

My take on it is that a trip, in most cases, is conducted with your body (even though you may be armed). However, certain weapons (as defined in their description) can be used to affect a trip. The advantage being that you can drop these weapons to avoid a successful counter-trip, which you can't do with a non-trip weapon.

That's correct. It always seemed clear to me, and the Sage previously confirmed, that trips are by default unarmed, and only allowed armed by those specific weapons which mention it.

A trip never provokes an AOO -- se Table 8-4 (PH p. 128), near the end.
