D&D 5E Triton race up for Adventure League

Rotten DM
As four hours ago Tritons now have Darkvision
While Mythic Odysseys of Theros is not a valid resource for Adventurers League play, the team at Wizards of the Coast has used it to make a change to the Triton racegranting Triton characters the Darkvision trait. This is an intentional change to the race itself, and the Wizards team will be updating Volo’s Guide to Monsters to reflect this change. As a result, Adventurers League-legal Triton characters do now have darkvision.

Dark vision on land or in water? These are one of those PC races that I probably wouldn't allow as a DM. I cant remember exactly but if I do don't they need to breathe water every so often? If not and they can breathe both air and water than that's a deal breaker for allowing this in my campaign. Just seems like I'd have to come up with ways to accommodate this race if it wasn't strictly a water based campaign.

I tend to agree, I suppose it could be ruled that they must do their Short and Long Rests submerged in water - essentially using exhaustion to model the dehydration caused by being on land rather than their natural habitat.

All I can think of is...Aquaman go talk to some fish.

Locathah are the fish people who have to spend 4 hours a day in water. No such issues for the Triton.

I suppose a DM can add handicaps to make them equally burdensome on the party if that's their jam. Other fun ideas to make people not play particular races would be to make reptilian races spend several hours a day sunning themselves to keep up their body temperature, give Goliaths difficulty breathing at low altitudes, and have healing magic not work on Warforged.

funny you should mention Goliaths and low altitude as that was a snippet I applied to dwarfs who tend to be dour, taciturn and grumpy when encountered in cities - theyre compromised at low altitudes but have learnt to endure it (Con bonus),
Moreover imc I also ruled that Giant characters over 10ft require more sleep (extra 2 hours for every foot above 10ft) - it explains why so many fairytales have heroes sneak up on sleeping giants, also why giants aren't seen Striding across the horizon all the time, they’re sleeping

Also as far as I’m concerned Locathah should be restricted to only a few hours on land and only at night or in rain when they wont be dried out by the sun. Also Dragonborn are warmblooded imc. It might also be a nice cultural detail for every Lizardman to go out at dawn and pray to the sun, a ritualised was to bask in the sunlight and awaken themselves each morning...

Well if we're going to do long sleep, then I suppose the Tabaxi should have to spend the majority of their lives sleeping like most Earth felines do.

Also a movement speed over 5 feet per round is clearly ridiculous for a Tortle.

I’d be happy with that for Tabaxi, but cats are hyper alert even while asleep so I’d allow Tabaxi advantage for perception while sleeping and quick reactions waking up.
