Trolls: impossible to kill without fire or acid?

Regeneration - Each round at the start of its turn, the monster regains hit points equal to the stated amount. This ability functions until the creature is reduced to 0 hit points.

Verbatim from the Monster Manual pg 282. Meaning once it reaches 0 hps it stops regenerating.

Suffocation never dealth ability damage. It made the victim continually attempt an easy Fort save, which got harder every round, to avoid immediately dropping to 0 hp, and then death, if I remember correctly. I once had a Wizard who drowned in 18 seconds, which is total bs from any kind of realistic perspective. >_<

Your Wizard had a 1 constitution? Did he get ability drained or something before going underwater?

And yes, it'd be rare to have zero fire or acid capabilities to use against the troll.

Trolls have a special ability which gives them HPs if they are dropped to 0 by anything other than fire or acid.

You needed fire or acid to kill a troll in 1E, or you were just screwed. I'm only to happy to see those days come back! :) Of course, as mentioned, fire effects are going to be a lot more common these days than they were back in the day.

The only wierd thing about trolls is that if you use the RAW they have to be actually dropped to 0 by the fire attack. If you drop them to 0 with a regular attack then burning the body doesn't help.

Not that I'd actually ever play like that, or expect anyone else to. It's just an amusing side effect to the wording.

I for one approve of the need for fire or acid to put down a troll for good. That'll teach those players who carry around those stupid glowsticks instead of torches. :D

I bet not one group I play in or run will ever not have ANY fire or acid effects, they are too common...
