True20 without the Adept?

There's no question that you could use the system to run a modern-day thriller, but would most players be turned off with a choice of just two classes?

Probably. My advice? Wait for the True20 Companion. Not only will it contain guidelines for designing your own roles (classes), but the Modern chapter will contain new roles specifically geared for modern campaigns.

Also, there are some nifty guidelines for using the Adept in modern games, even those without magic.

Take a look at the powers list and you'll realize that there are a number of "self-buff" powers that don't have to be in any way supernatural. Instead, they are like the Rage feat, internal buffs that a character can activate to enhance their abilities. (I'm honestly beginning to wish that Rage and Smite were balanced off of Fatigue saves so that they could be done as desired rather than on some formula based upon level; I may have my first real True20 houserule there.)

Solid examples are: Body Control, Combat Sense, Enhance Ability, Heart Reading, Nature Reading and Supernatural Speed.

Add in some of the feats from Borrowed Time and you have a robust and powerful role that will attract many players.

To answer your actual question, two roles only feels a tiny bit limiting. It's basically the same as having a classless system; tons of choices, probably too many. Just tell people the type of game you want to run and they'll think of their own characters to fit into it; then you help them build their characters using the roles you wish to allow.

This seems very intersting to me. True20 seems built on per encounter basis, except forthese small leftovers from D&D. Any ideas?

Probably a Fatigue Save, Difficulty 10 + 1/2 Warrior level. Only usable once per encounter, same duration as normal. Increase the DC by +1 per fatiguing feat (not powers, feats) used this day.

You still get to rage but the fatigue it causes is now normal fatigue, though you may completely avoid it.
Alternatively, you could require another fatigue save each round, with a cumulative +1 per save or per use. Which leads to unpredictable durations, which seems to be a bad thing.

Ok this works. A Fort save I guess? That would keep the DC increase on par with the save increase. If not the, warrior will become easir to fatigue as he raises in level (1/2 v/s 1/3)

What else would benefit from this? Smite Oponent.

I've been considering the Adept-less approach for a project in the works and I don't think it would detract, depending on the setting. Now Roudi has me curious, though, about the Companion. When's it coming out?

As far as I know, the True20 Companion is still in the editing/layout stage. The website says "coming soon." So, when it's coming out is anyone's guess!

Spot-on, sir... I mentioned this fact in my discussion of the modern Adept in the book.

The Adept is probably the #2 reason I haven't used True20 yet. Either the games I would run wouldn't need it, but I think the system is balanced to the three roles ... or the game I would run would need something less "ta-da" and, again.

So I'd have to get under the hood, play a bunch of games with it, and figure out what needs to be moved where and when and how without messing things up. Just don't have that kind of time and player-base.

I'm currently runing a game with a stripped down Adept. You can cull 2/3 of the powers and still have enough powers for a player to use.

I've also run a game without adepts. Warrior and Expert cover everything fine, and are pretty balanced between them.
