TruTV Forensic Files Show paints D&D as violent, but jerk kids made it happen.

This really ticks me off.

What the hell are these a**hats doing saying that the fake implications of the bombing was because of playing D&D? Sometimes there are freaks in every group, but it seems that our hobby has just a few too many weirdos.

They were playing a game and wanted to role-play the interrogations?????

Okay. So your title seems angry at the show, but your post is more upset towards the players?

I really see no problem with how the show depicted the game. It provides an honest enough detailing of the game and the number of people that play it. And the investigators point out that there have been some infrequent violent incidences of the game (which is also true, unfortunately).

And yeah, the kids were dumb. I wish I could see the whole thing taken in context, though.

You're right, I need to change the title.

I started typing it out after I got about halfway through the clip. I was really incensed with the small D&D blurb I saw before I watched the whole thing.

Ah, okay. It makes more sense, then. Which is kind of funny, because I was about to comment on your post before watching the entirety of the video. :)

I do see a problem with the show. They are assuming they lied because of DnD. If you dug deep enough I bet each played monoply at one time. So that must be the game that caused them to lie.
It couldn't be how they where interigated that caused them to implacate each other.

No, from the clip given, the investigators are TOLD BY THE KIDS they lied because of the game. Which the investigators conclude is "an incredibly stupid thing to do".

also, I see no reason why the Forensic show shouldn't say D&D is a violent game. I mean, the unofficial motto of the game IS "kill things and take their stuff", and most of the game does centre around combat...

so do most video games.

first I see that show as nothing more than sensaualism.

It seems more of a witchhunt because they play DnD.

It is not uncommon for kids to blame someone or something else for there lying.

It does make me wonder, though, if D&D was brought up earlier in the questioning, and the the kids jumped on that afterwards as an explanation, to save face or something.

It just seems really strange to me that they'd finger D&D as a reason to lie during the questioning; I don't get the connection between that and a bombing investigation. Why not say they were influenced by something relevant, like CSI or 24 or something? That would seem a more natural "explanation" from them, given the nature of the actual crime.

It looked to me more like the cops interrogated the kids until the kids finally implicated each other.

THEN the cops found out that neither of them could have done it, so the cops presumably interrogated them until they implicated D&D.

All this shows me is that interrogation isn't close to foolproof, particularly if the interrogator has an agenda.

Cheers, -- N

1) I watched the show a while back, and posted about it in another thread. After a lengthy interrogation, the kids definitely said something to the effect of wanting to RP the interrogations. The D&D angle didn't come up until they (not the investigators) brought it up.

2) Interrogations have repeatedly shown to have problems, as have jury trials and forensics. We are, after all, only human.
