Luckily he assured me that D&D was not the "devil's game", but did caution me that it probably wasn't the best choice of pastimes for the immature/addictive personalities/mentally unstable etc. Thus reassured I pulled my 1E books back out of the attic where I stashed them, and resumed playing happily. :)

My confessionals always consisted more of friendly banter rather than supplication. *shrug*

I am NOT a moderator, so you can tell me to STFU if you think it's appropriate, but here are my two cents.

It is not permitted to talk about politics or religions on ENworld. Not just "bad mouth" them, or "praise" them, or relate a cool event where politics or religion were involved, it's just not allowed to talk about them period.

And the reason is simple: even if your intent is quite cool (as I think the OP's intent is), this is a message board, where thousands of people can reply and decide to take your thread in something slightly different than your original intent. Eventually (and I have YET to see a single religious/political thread where this didn't happen), someone, somewhere, will read something that will brush him the wrong way. That will offend him. And that ain't cool.

There was a thread about the movie The Passion in the movie forum that was locked. However, WAY before Henry (Moderator) decided to lock it, I was offended more than once by some of the posts. I shut up, swallowing it up. And I'm a purty tolerant dude. I thought "if I am shocked, there must be others who feel the same way".

Like I said, not a moderator, but I would REALLY like it if people in this thread made a special effort (more than usual) and refrain from using even the slightest innuendo. Reread yourself before clicking that "Submit Reply" button.

I am extremely sorry if I sound like I'm on a soapbox. I really am.

Back in the 80s I remember watching a Geraldo episode where some woman was crying about how the dice would "talk" to her and try to get her to do evil things. The best part was when she said she threw the dice in the fire and they screamed in evil, maniacal laughter! Man, that was one of the funniest episodes I ever saw. Geraldo sure was good for some laughs (Springer too!).

These aren't the 80s anymore; most members of the general public no longer hold hysterical views of role-playing games. Likewise people whose personal philosophy was once seen as unfriendly to role-playing are now unconditionally accepted in the hobby.

And of all the changes I've seen over the last twenty-five years in regards to RPGs, this is the very best one.

my dad still thinks rpg's are evil but i just defy him.
If the worse thing I had to worry about my kids (13 YO daughter and 12 YO son) was for them to play RPG's, man, my life would be so much easier.

Why can't my kids be geeks ?

Oh... that's right. Kids don't want to do what their parents do. It's not cool.

*sigh*

Okay, I'm a Christian just to establish that. I don't play D&D, but I do play other games. I went and read Jack Chick's website once to see if he had anything worthwhile to say on the subject. I don't know how many of you know what his arguments are, but I really think they were quite silly. As far as I can tell, the gist of his argument is that people who play D&D get caught up in their imaginations where they don't know reality from fiction and start 'devil worshipping' or something. I can see this happening, and it may be a legitimate argument for some small minority of people, but I think most people are mature enough to know fantasy from reality. Perhaps this is more fo a problem with younger children, especially those going through major personal problems. But all in all, I don't think it's a major problem, and everybody at churhc knows I game.

Interestingly though, my Mum just started going crazy at me last week for roleplaying. She had exactly the same argument that it'll rot and corrupt your brain because I'm such an idiot that I don't know reality from a game or movie or whatever else. I can't believe it still... I mean, I'm really into gaming, but I still know what's going on in the world. Blah, prejudice. :(

anyway, my 2 cents.

To get it away from religion and on to gamer prejudices, our whole group was stunned when one day the chinese food delivery guy brought us our food, looked at our table, and his face lit up as he recognized the game.
Chinese people play RPGs too, it seems.
