TSR paid $1,000,000 for the Dragonlance logo? (New: Response from the authors)

Even more entertaining than the various responses in this thread (I especially like Monte's)...

Noble Knight wants $500 for three strips of paper with a hideous logo on it that a 10 year old could do better? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

I have the original ad campaign Gary Gygax paid a national advertising firm to draw up in 1974. Strangely, it's all done on an empty Del Taco bag, but it's still all true!

It can be yours today for a mere $50,000! What a bargain!

Another proof that Nike are just a bunch of slavers.

Anyway, I lucked out and got a job at NASA. I do posters, cartoons, logos, patches, etc. We have a surprising amount of creative freedom, something I always appreciate.
You lucky guy, I envy you... :(

Heh, I was delusional enough to think I could get into comic books.
Ah, just the same for me here... :D

I worked for a multimedia company and our head graphic artist had me bring in my old copies of Previews so he could keep up on comic book art styles. Why? Because all though art school he was told not to include any "robots, dragons, or fantasy pictures" in his portfolio because it wouldn't look professional. Once he got into the real world, the only people really hiring were game companies that all told him "You work is really good but you don't have any robots, dragons, or fantasy pictures in you portfolio which is what we need. Come back when you've updated your portfolio."
LOL!!!

Other than that, really a great thread !

2. He got a lot of harsh criticism around here after he was the first person that WotC ever enforced a breach of the OGL on (March 2003), after he used ~30 monsters from the Monster Manual II and the Greyhawk pantheon in his books, and WotC made him destroy them. It appears he's bitter because a lot of attention was drawn to the breaches by reviewers and message board posters.

My memory might be deficient, but I remember it like this (paraphrased):

WotC said "you're in violation"
Jim Ward said "uh, I didn't understand the OGL"
WotC said "well, make sure you do"
Jim Ward said "okay, okay, okay ... hmmm ... I'll just destroy the damn books then"

Jim Ward then implied that WotC forced him to destroy the books, but reading his communication to the public carefully revelead that he himself took that decision. WotC did not make him destroy the books. But Ward really, really wanted people to interpret the situation that way.

At least that's my recollection of the incident.

Jim's a great story teller. But has been known to exaggerate from time to time.

To time.
You can just change Jim to which every military guy is talking to you and be safe. After all there is no ice in Germany because they drink their beer warm.

Exactly. They issued a big press release implying that they were forced to destroy books. This was also around the same time they offered their "lifetime subscriptions."

I wonder how many people paid the $1,000 or whatever they were charging for the subscription.

IIRC, it was $4,000.

Also, IIRC, the number that participated was: zero.

So where did the logos originate? Someone must've drawn them for some purpose. I don't think Jim Ward painted them himself...

Really, I'm curious.
