Tumble charge?

But the more telling story is the lack of prohibition under the charge description. One can charge with any sort of movement.

But one cannot tumble with any sort of movement - only as part of "normal movement".

Yeah, yeah. And "normal movement" is undefined in D&D.

Thus my proposed compromise above.

True. I'd define it personally as "the Move action or the Double Move action", not applicable while Climbing or Jumping.

Swimming, Flying, and Burrowing would be situation-dependent.

Hee hee. Tumbling while climbing. Now that would be funny!

"I climb up the 500' cliff. With my +25 climbing skill, I have no problem."

"At 20' from the top you find that your climbing path takes you next to a rather large spider who appears to be intent on getting his dinner - you!"

"I tumble past him! With my +25 tumble skill I have no trouble, right?"

"No touble at all. No trouble FALLING, that is."

"Arrrrgggghhhh....."

While jumping? Hmmm.... perhaps.

I would consider jumping in such a fashion as to avoid an AoO to be a Tumble check, whereas jumping to cover distance (eg to clear a chasm) to be a Jump check.

If there were a dragon hovering over said chasm, and you wanted to jump the chasm and avoid AoOs at the same time, I'd rule you're out of luck. While in mid leap, you are on a predictable ballistic trajectory.

Someone with a fly speed would be a different story, because their path across the chasm can be an unpredictable one.

Sort of. Because you are not a rock, but a person who can tuck legs and arms in and somersault, or spread them out to slow down, or otherwise change your aerodynamic characteristics.

So I'll stick with "maybe." At a penalty, certainly, if at all.

I wouldn't say, "maybe." I'd say, "Describe what you're doing."

And if the player gives me a blank look, then I'll say, "Nope."

But if the player says, "Okay, I'm running toward the edge of the chasm, and leaping forward, and right as I reach the dragon I'm going to grab at its talons and push off of them to propel myself forward toward the far side of the chasm," then I'll say, "Cool, go ahead and give me some checks." And I'll make it easy to succeed, because this is the kind of thing I want to encourage.
