Turn Undead

I wonder if when you said "played like detect magic", you meant that the cleric could keep the effect and turn once a round, or just an instantaneous effect.

Oh, definitely instantaneous. I just meant the area it affected. But I can't find anything to support my memories, so I'm willing to admit I've had it wrong for all this time :)

I have always played it as the 360 burst as stated in the PHB. Undead closest to you car affected first and spread out until your “turn damage” is spent.

I'll stop lurking around this thread long enough to agree. No sense adding restrictions that aren't specifically stated.
Damn! Now I'm two cents short for coffee...

The idea of a 90 degree cone must be something from an earlier edition. There's nothing like that in 3E.

As for the matter of line of sight, it really is not very clear, but it does say that you have to present your holy symbol. So, you might infer that the reason they are protected by cover is that the holy symbol is not within THEIR line of sight. In other words, the undead have to be able to see the cleric. Even if they are "looking the other direction", they would still be treated as being able to see the holy symbol, since there is no mechanic, such as "facing" to determine that sort of thing. (I guess maybe they are somehow a holy symbol has a way of drawing their attention . . .). All of this, of course, is mere inference. I have no proof that this is the way you have to do it.

I have a question regarding turning damage.

When it states that you can destroy undead if you have twice their levels are they speaking of Turning Damage result or the actual chracter levels?

I am just a bit confused about that one.

If your Cleric level is twice their hit dice + TR.

Doesn't the TR already include your level? Why add it twice?

Hmm? TR = Turn Resistance.

A 6th level cleric could turn, say, a 10HD undead with a really good roll. On a really bad roll, he might only turn undead with up to 2HD. Any undead that he successfully turns with 3 or less HD are destroyed, not just turned.

However, take a ghoul - it only has 2HD, but it has +2 TR. For purposes of calculating turning effects, it is treated as a 4HD undead. So even with a really good turning check, the Clr-6 will only turn a ghoul, not destroy it.
