TV shows and their spinoffs

Well, originally Phoebe was supposed to be Ursula, but they soon realized that they wanted someone a bit nicer (and uh... less slutty) on Friends (y'know, "Friends" an' all) so they decided to create Phoebe instead.

I don't know if it fits as a spin-off, but the two shows definately
share a universe. I'd put this in the same camp as the whole
'Detective Munch' thing.
Fair enough. :)

I just read that article posted about and I guess many of these shows share the same TV universe. And they all appear in St. Elsewhere's autistic kid's daydream.

So the question remains... is Piratecat the kid's daydream as well therefore making the Hivemind simply a daydream? :p

Mad about You and Seinfeld also shared the same Universe since Kramer's apartment was originally Paul's who sublet it to Kramer and then turned it over entirely when Jamie found out that Paul was still keeping his bachlor pad after they were married.

That's a bit of trivia I did not know...

Gotta love EN World! :p

[*]Happy Days ---> Laverne & Shirley; Joanie Loves Chachi; Mork & Mindy

There's another series in here, but I can't think of the name of it. I remember seeing it on a special about Gary Marshall (or maybe it was Penny Marshall). It had both Laverne and Chachi (when he was still just a little kid) on it. Actually, now that I think about it, it may have been the 1st appearance of Chachi.

Here's a few more:

He-Man ---> She-Ra. Plus there are the 2 revivals of He-Man, but they don't really count.

The Muppet Show --> Muppets Tonight; Muppet Babies

Hercules ---> Xena; Young Hercules

Lone Ranger ---> Green Hornet (he's LR's great-nephew or something)

And wasn't there a very short-lived lawyer show starring that bald defense attorney that spun off from N.Y.P.D. Blue? Or was that a shared universe thing? I didn't watch the lawyer show, so I have no idea.

I can think of a bunch that are more "shared universe" than spin-offs (like the Space Ghost, his later series that feature Kid Comet, Moleculad, and, um, the girl, whatshername, and Herculoids).

Oh wait! Space Ghost ---> Space Ghost Coast-To-Coast (different enough from the original to count as a spin-off); The Brak Show :)

And whatever show Birdman was on ---> Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law

I know they tried to spin off Jonah Hex and Creeper from Batman Adventures, but they never got off the ground.

And what was that show that Nell Carter did back in the '80's? Didn't that spin-off from something like Diff'rent Strokes?

I checked out IMDB.com and found all the spin-offs for Happy Days:

"Laverne & Shirley" (1976)
"Blansky's Beauties" (1977)
"Mork & Mindy" (1978)
"Out of the Blue" (1979)
"Fonz and the Happy Days Gang" (1980)
"Joanie Loves Chachi" (1982)
"Mork & Mindy/Laverne & Shirley/Fonz Hour, The" (1982)

Blansky's Beauties was the one I was thinking of.

For those who don't know:

Blansky's Beauties had Nancy Walker playing Nancy Blanksy, who was the cousin of Howard Cunningham. Scott Baio was simultaneously playing Anthony DeLuca on Blansky's Beauties while playing Chaci Arcola on Happy Days. Also interesting to note is that Pat Morita had left Happy Days to star in his own flop, Mr. T and Tina before heading to Blansky's Beauties as a restuarant owner also name Arnold (he eventaully returned to Happy Days).

The only two things I remember about Blansky's Beauties were Scott Baio and the leggy babes in bikini :D

So Scott Baio wasn't actually playing Chachi, huh? Laverne was definitely on it, though (I remeber that much from the clip :)).

And Pat Morita? Does anyone remember his show from the '80's, Ohara? I happened to watch a video I taped from tv from that time recently and there was a commercial for it.

And here are some more spin-offs:

Battlestar Galactica ---> Galactica 1980 (I think that was the title)

Dragonball ---> DBZ ---> DB GT

Married With Children ---> Top Of The Heap

Bob Newhart Show ---> Newhart (although you don't know it until Newhart's finale :))

Superfriends ---> Challenge Of The Superfriends ---> Super Powers

Now, before anyone objects to the Superfriends spin-offs and claims that it's just a matter of being based on the same source (i.e., DC Comics), I'll point out that all three series contained characters not appearing in the comics, like Apache Chief and Samurai. I think even El Dorado appeared on all 3. Not sure about Black Vulcan, though.

Man, now that I think about it, the minority superheroes on that show sucked! Seriously, it's like Ethnic Stereotype Theatre. A Native American called Apache Chief who speaks like Tonto? It's the 20th century, man! What, did he drop out of 2nd grade to talk like that?

I'm actually surprised they never had an Indian called "Hindu". :)

Happy Days apparently actually came out of Love American Style.

Also, Green Hornet is probably better labeled a spin-off from the old Batman series. Unless there's another Green Hornet series that I don't know about, anyway.

There's also a Love Boat -> Fantasy Island thing, although I can't remember the specifics of how they fit together.

I had forgotten about the Love, American Style --> Happy Days connection.

While there were a couple of cross-overs between the two, apparently Green Hornet was not a spin-off of Batman. They were, however, produced by the same person. Both series had several episodes before the characters met in the cross-over episodes. And the Green Hornet had been on radio for about 15 years before it was on t.v.

Murder One. No idea whether he played the same character or not. Since (I think) Murder One took place in LA, probably not.
