But (and I am really curious about this), isn't that what house rules are for? I mean, DMs have been restricting things since dice were colored in with crayons.

I like hold person, not happy at all about tielfings. I'll call it even. Especially if tieflings are labelled as a Rare race, or mechancially are like a bloodline template.
 


Great! I can finally start buying WotC products again!
I have a feeling the second half of 2012 and the first half of 2013 will have several system-neutral-style books as part of the schedule. And if WotC actually does reprints of some of the old 1e modules* to support the Premium core books, it will be a very good time to be a fan old-school D&D.

*Hinted at during the 2012 product seminar.
