Two-Handers with with - Str bonus question

Well, attack bonus isn't impacted by this anyway.

It also says bonus, not modifier, for damage rolls (PHB, p.113) - which may or may not imply something.

I think I've seen a ruling on this long ago (Sage, IIRC) but I can't recall it right now.

Edit -
It's in the 3.0 FAQ:

Does a character with a low Strength score really deal
more damage with his off hand? The rules say you apply
half your Strength bonus on an off hand attack. Also, you
get one and a half times your Strength bonus when using a
two-handed weapon. So does a character with a Strength
penalty deal even less damage with a two-handed weapon? I
am similarly confused over Dexterity modifiers and Armor
Class.
A bonus is a positive modifier and a penalty is a negative
modifier. There are no negative bonuses or positive penalties in
the game. When attacking with an off hand or with a twohanded
weapon, you take your full Strength penalty. When
surprised, you lose your Dexterity bonus, but you retain your
Dexterity penalty.

You're at -2 to attack and damage. A two-handed weapon gives you a bonus on damage equal to 1.5 x Str bonus. The key bit is that it says Str bonus, not Str modifier. Since you have no Str bonus, you simply get the normal penalties, which are -2 to damage (and to hit) for your Str.

Of course, it is a fine and logical candidate for a house rule which isn't going to break a game and makes plenty of sense IMO :)

Gee, it's been five years -- even more -- and still there are gamers out there that cannot tell the difference between a bonus and a modifier.

I think the glossary near the end of PHB is a waste of ink and pages. :]

Think about it this way.

You swing a weapon, the weapon has a certain weight that does a certain damage. If you're weak, you can't even swing the full weight, but just cause it's two handed doesn't mean you swing it even worse. However if you're strong, the extra leverage allows you to really bear down and use your strength more effectively.

I don't think a character with a 7 stength score could lift a great sword.

Sure, he can.

A character with a 7 Strength has a "light load" of 23 lbs. A greatsword weighs 8 lbs. Heck, even a 3 Strength can "easily" lift and carry a greatsword -- a 3 Strength has a "light load" of 10 lbs.

the question is does a pc with a 7 str even have prof with a great sword?
and if he did I would like a video of the training please-that had to be one heck of a teacher!
