D&D 5E Two questions about short rest healing

I have a couple questions about healing, they're probably obvious but I'm drawing a blank.

1) DMG p267, "slow natural healing". If, during a long rest, you can only spend HD to heal HP (per a short rest), when exactly do you regain said HD? Only after being fully healed by spending HD? Do you need to wait an extra day? I'm considering this rule variant but I may be misunderstanding it.

2) How many activities can be stacked together during a short rest? Can characters spend HD, while also recovering their Warlock/Fighter/Monk powers - or does power recovery require focused attention at the exclusion of other activities?

Observation: if the latter, then this would result in added "grit" to a campaign because it would force players to choose which resource to recover during a short rest.

1) With a long rest, as normal... but I'd rule that not during the long rest when you spend them!

2) You can do all of those during a short rest.

2O) Or force longer short rests!

Cheers!

The slow natural healing rules assume that you regain the same number of hit dice during a long rest that you would normally (half, minimum 1), but that you have to spend them in order to heal (you don't both reset to full and regain hit dice, basically).

As Merric said, you get to do all of that stuff in a short rest, though it's a popular house rule for people looking to do a grittier style to do one or the other.
