Two-weapon fighting (not really) and AoO

Hi guys.
The setup is this:
- PC vs NPC wizard - there right next to each other.
- The PC is wielding a long sword and a long spear. On the PC's round he only used the longsword to attack and just holds the spear.
- On the wizards turn he makes a 5-foot step and starts to cast a spell.
Question part:
- Would the PC get an AoO with the spear with only a -4 to attack for making an attack with a two handed weapon, or would he get and extra penalty for TWF?

Neither. The long spear is a two-handed weapon, and he's only got one hand on it - he doesn't get to attack with it at all.

And, per the FAQ, he can't even drop his longsword, switch to a two-handed grip, and then make his AoO - switching to that two-handed grip is a move action and it's not his turn.

However, if the character has a feat that allows him to use a two-handed weapon in one hand (Monkey Grip or similar), then he can make an AoO with the longspear. In which case, he takes any penalty associated with making use of the feat, but no further penalty for two-weapon fighting. Because he isn't actually two weapon fighting.

Aha, O.K..
Follow up questions:
- So its this ruling because a) you can't AoO with a 2HW with in one hand or b) you can't attack with a 2HW in one hand?
- Isn't there the rule that you get a -4 on attackes with 2HW in one hand?
- Would using a Long Spear for a small character work?

B. There's a clue in the name. :)

Not that I'm aware of (and I've just checked the SRD, though I might have missed it). But as I said, there may be a feat that allows this, or it might be one of your house rules.

Amusingly, yes it would. Using a small longspear would make it a one-handed weapon, while not (per RAW) removing the reach of the weapon. Of course, you would take a -2 penalty on attack rolls for the difference in size.
