Two weapons and reach

First Post
Think about a character wielding a reach weapon with one hand (for example some with a glaive and Monkey Grip) and a standard weapon in the other. ¿Is he threatening both at 10 and at 5 feet?

And another thing: In the description of the Duelist PrC (in the Precise Strike ability) the text says something like "the character can still use his off-hand weapon for defense" ¿how can you do that?

I would make the guy choose which his primary weapon was since that is the only thing you can threaten with.

Yes, you would threaten 5 and 10 feat, just with different weapons.

There are feats like off hand parry that allow you to use a weapon for defense

ok... let me rephrase that... most people can only make 1 AoO per round... if an opponent is coming at or by this guy, he would probably provoke an AoO for moving out of the reach weapon's threatened area... so the guy would have to decide if he wanted to use his AoO for that round at this time... or wait for someone else to provoke something.

If the spear/sword guy has a high DEX and Combat reflexes, I guess I would allow you to threaten both ranges, but all two weapon fighting penalties would apply for each AoO.

The two-weapon fighting penalties apply to every attack made during the round, including AoO's made prior to the character's next action. If the character made only a single attack or no attack at all during his action. I'd have to say that the AoO would be at no penalty, regardless of which weapon he used. Or just the off-hand penalty, if he doesn't have Ambidexterity ... Since he'd need Dex 15 to get Ambidex (unless he's a Ranger), that comes to pretty much the same thing.

I thought you attacked in AoO with your full attack bonus, except for Expertise penalties or others that specifically stat that remain until next round.

If you have the ability to threaten with two weapons... you should pay the penalties for using those two weapons.

'Should' or 'do'? We're in the Rules forum at present ...

The note under the AoO section that such attacks are made at the character's highest BAB clearly refers to the decreased BAB's for iterative attacks ... I don't see any reason that the penalties to all attacks from TWF wouldn't carry over to AoO's made before the next action. I also don't see any reason that these penalties would be added to AoO's when multiple attacks weren't taken during the regular round, though.

Only the same reasons that he would have the penaties for fighting defensively, expertise, power attack, ect. When they refer to your highest BAB, they mean only that you're not penalized for haveng made one or more attacks each round. It's a book keeping saver, not a means of bypassing penalties. The fact that some do not specifically say this was either an oversight or a desire to cut down on text.

Just look at it like this, if you need a visual. Does getting an AoO make you better at weilding a 6' spear with one hand and a 4' sword in the other? No.
