It sold like hotcakes, though, and at least we had fun with it in my circles. The Internet "consensus" is...not necessarily what people at large think.

Hoard is a railroad, which, for an adventure that was meant for newbies is not that bad*.

Tyranny was more open, although it could also be run as a railroad.

I've ran it three times for three different groups of newbies and a failed fourth and they all enjoyed it very much. With minimal changes to the printed adventure at that!

*Linear adventures can be fun an easier to run, but an inexperienced DM can also stumble with how to hit the beats of the campaign when the players go off the rails, so to speak.
