[UA] facing and the shield spell

It seems to me that the facing rules in Unearthed Arcana really hurt the shield spell. With these rules, a normal shield only protects you on one side. Then the shield spell says it's like a normal (hand held) shield. So in the end, we have the restrictions of 3.0 but with the lowere AC bonus of 3.5.

Am I missing something, or is that just a big ol' nerf?

That does sound bad I must aquire this ua book and find out if there are other very strange things going on there.

Perhaps the magic of the shield spell can overcome ua??
