Ugh, I hate monty haulism.

What's all this rubbish about getting bodies and names? Back in my day we didn't even get our own characters or even a game session! The DM wrote down the whole adventure with his own bunch of lousy NPCs acting as the heroes, all without any say so from us. He'd then sell it to a publisher and us players would have to pay for the priviledge of reading the adventure and enjoying the game vicariously that way. Now that's old school!

You got bodies at 9th level? Lucky bastard! We only got a head at 9th level.

Oh, well, you were lucky then! We only got a face, lying there on the floor. Had to wield the swords with our tongues, we did. Except the gnomes, who could use their noses...

I always suspected my DM was a Monty Haul kinda guy! This confirms it.

I did hear of one campaign where the party consisted of 2 fighters who only had one eyeball each, a wizard with only a chipped tooth, rogue with only a broken finger nail and the cleric who only had half an eyebrow.

Yep, those were the days.

I think there is a soldier base class in Conan OGL (MGP).
Ah, of course. I misunderstood. I didn't get that he was playing an actual Conan RPG game, I thought it was just Conan-style D&D or maybe Iron Heroes.

We DMs didn't have it any better, I once had to run a game for Tom Hanks, Jack Chic, and Patricia Pullings.

You guys were lucky,

RK

hehehehehehe

but seriously.... just wrap your minds around that situation for a moment!

I have to add that your DM is generous. You had Classes AND races. In the old games, if you were an elf, that was it. No elf fighter or mage. Just an elf. Race or class, make the hard choice.

You guys should play in my Midnight campaign. When you kill an orc, it IS the treasure.

Fighter: I'm starved! Dibs on the ribs!
Cleric: OOh, this Femur will make a dandy mace!
Mage: Cut his stomach open, no telling what we might find in there!
Thief: Dibs on the family jewels!

I have no time for quotation marks.

Indeed it is. It's the Conan version of the fighter. Conan also has the barbarian, nomad, scholar, pirate, thief, and borderer.

I think a lot of people missed the point of this thread. ;) I recently ran a short Conan campaign. Giving the players a suit of chainmail or a greatsword is BIGTIME treasure. I loved it.

Knowing that it's a Conan campaign, getting any kind of magic item is definitely Monty Haul.
