Ugh, I hate monty haulism.

Indeed it is. It's the Conan version of the fighter. Conan also has the barbarian, nomad, scholar, pirate, thief, and borderer.

I think a lot of people missed the point of this thread. ;) I recently ran a short Conan campaign. Giving the players a suit of chainmail or a greatsword is BIGTIME treasure. I loved it.

Knowing that it's a Conan campaign, getting any kind of magic item is definitely Monty Haul.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too.

I ran DARK SUN for years. That was a great setting for being a cheap GM.

"You guys find a bone sword on the nobleman."
"Bone sword?"
"Yeah."
"wait, that's like, a -1 on attack and damage, right?"
"Yeah."
"Like a cursed sword in normal D&D?"
"Yup."
"Oh my god. THIS IS THE BEST TREASURE WE'VE EVER FOUND!"

I once had a group of PCs literally come to blows over who would get the metal longsword, at 5th level, which was the equivalent of a starting weapon for 1st level PCs in other campaigns.

In DARK SUN, "monty haulism" is giving out too many potions.

Stuff like weapons and armor are remarkably common in nearly all of the source material. Has anybody complaining herein about people having access to swords and medieval armor ever read any Conan? For Crom's sake, Conan picked up a greatsword on his first REH outing! The idea that all metal armor and weapons are ultra-rare is a misconception. Bronze is everywhere.

Sure, I have to conceed that. In the vast majority of Conan stories, it was unusual for anybody other than the eeeeeeeevil villain to have access to magic. Real men use swords to win the day!

Unless those swords were all magical, I'm assuming sarcastic :)

Magic swords? In Conan? Howard's stories take the view of "He's Conan, bitch, that's what matters."

Equally mystified here. "It's a sword, it looks like this" is all the detail I can remember from the four or five REH stories I've read. And Conan goes through a lot of swords. Get sword, fight, get captured, get free, get sword, fight, get captured...is a pattern from story to story.

Now...the poisons are both extremely deadly and extremely rare and come from far-off, dangerous jungles, and the treasures are rare and wondrous items--most of the population dreams of owning something approaching that level of wealth.

Where did I say they were rare?

Starting characters in Conan don't start with a lot of gear - one average weapon and maybe a suit of light armor at the most. They definitely can't afford to buy such items either.

So anything the PC's wanted they had to find. Greatswords are actually exotic weapons in Conan so they aren't what I would call common.

It also depends on the region of the campaign. The campaign I ran was in the Black Kingdoms (basically Africa). It was really hot and they had to do a lot of overland travel. Metal armor just wasn't practical.

That quote above is why I've always thought that Iron Heroes was an excellent representation of Conan. I wish I could *find* a copy of the actual RPG, but my local gaming store doesn't carry it because the internal artwork isn't "family friendly."

Ah well, something to look for at GenCon this year. :)

Ask them to order it for you. They may ask for a deposit; I used to ask for a deposit as there were too many folks ordering stuff then not showing up to pick it up (after repeated calls on my part) or they never seemed to have the money to pay for it when it came in.

I don't see why they wouldn't get it in for you.

Thanks,
Rich

That's not Monty Haul ... THIS IS MONTY HAUL.
"You enter a large room, fifty feet by fifty feet. On the far wall are two large double doors. The double doors are numbered 'one' and 'two.' Besides the double doors is a red curtain. A statue of a semi clothed female human stands beside the curtain and points to the curtain. What do you do?"

Now I have the urge to make the ultimate Monty Haul Orc & Pie Dungeon - "Let's make a meal!"

Btw: The answer when faced with Door #1, Door #2 or the Curtain Carol Marol is standing by is always take Carol!
