Ultimate RPG room

Every person that I have known that has played any kind of RPG has always mention dedicating a room of their house to their hobby. They talk of the ultimate room they would play in. I want to know that if you had $10,000, how would you design your ultimate RPG room?

Hmm... A large room, for one thing. Some 10 meters x 10 meters. A big dinner table, with space for six people to sit comfortably, plus DM in the end. This table would be laminated and would have a pattern of inch-wide hexes, for use with miniatures. The table's edges would be slightly raised, to prevent dice from rolling off. All chairs would be comfortable, and just the perfect height for the table.

At the DM's end of the table, on a smaller side table, would be a computer, with a reasonably fast Internet connection, a high-quality printer/scanner/copymachine, and all the other stuff. All the major RPG sites would be bookmarked on the browser. The WinAmp would have a playlist of suitable background music and dungeon sounds.

Behind the DM would be a large bookshelf, full of gaming products. The other walls would have similar bookshelves and some original art from Jeff Easley, Keith Parkinson, Larry Elmore, and Brom. Also, there would be a large fridge and a cupboard, both filled with snacks and soft drinks. A large glass cabinet left of the DM would hold the miniatures.

That would probably cost a lot more than 10,000$.

Mine would have to host Big Wargames too... so the table would be a tad large... I think round tables lets all the players closer to the DM so a large round table...

Should I pig out... then a freezer and microwave should be close by for fast popcorn and softdrink access.

Acoustics would be important too... isolate outside sounds as well as not amplify inside sound. Exception would be the DM... maybe some kind of special place for the DMs voice to be amplified. (Maybe microfone ? Special stuff to make those ogre and Dragon voices without losing your voice ! )

My ultimate room wouldn't come close to 10,000 since I'm more than capable of doing the work myself.

A 20ft x 20ft room would be more than enough.

I would paint a ye olde hamlet on all of the walls.
Est. cost: $200

I would redesign a gaming table that I already built.
I simply double the size of my current one. It is an octagon poker/gaming table with: an inner leather octagon for mats, etc., felted drop pockets (sunk 1in deep) for dice rolling, a poker chip tray runs along the outside of the table (which holds dice very well). 2 Cup holders run from points of inner octagon to points of the outside of the table. The cup holders divide each drop pocket.
Est. cost: $200

A book shelf situated directly behind the DM's area would be wonderful. Est. cost: $100
A merchant display case would be great for minis this could occupy the area next to the book shelf. However a mobile mini shelf, in addition to the permanent shelf, would be necessary.
Est. cost: ??

Surround sound stereo for room. Est. cost: $500

Comfy, but not TOO comfy, chairs for 8. Est. cost: $800

Total cost: +$1800

Ah a demiplane of my own...

Well, it would be about 20' by 20' and have a very big gaming table--to comfortably seat 8 people, and be able to squeeze in more if necessary. An expandable table with leaves and such would be really cool. The table top would be nice felt, and would have cupholders built in, so you wouldn't worry about spilling drinks. Small indentations for dice rolling and snack bowl placement would also be nice. The DM end of the table would have an indentation to sit/stand in, so that there was a bit of table space on either side of it. (or just have room for two side tables.)

The walls would be fairly blank, but be the type of wall that's really easy to hang posters on. The entire room would be plastered with roleplaying-esque posters. Along one of the side walls, or on the wall opposin the DM end of the table, would be a large refridgerator stocked with Mountain Dew of both colors, food, and Coke for the one freak in the group who doesn't drink mt. dew....LOL. A pantry full of goodies that don't go in the fridge/freezer would be right next to it.

The room would have a table behind the DM that had a computer (decent enough to run music and maybe some utility programs) a color printer is optional but cable modem (or maybe even T1...hehe) internet is required. Alternatively, (and maybe even prefereably) the side table near the DM would have a new laptop with a huge harddrive and dvd-rom and internet access.

One wall would hold a glass case full of miniatures and other fantasy figurines.

I think that's about all....damn that would be nice to have.

I would need a hardwood tabletop to seat somewhere between six and eight, a fridge with pepsi, and maybe some chips. The room needs to large enough for all the people to crash in relatively easily.

The DM's end of the table would have a low screen type deal if possible, and there would need to be small end tables or trays set up around the room, because I like to get up and move around when I DM.

A CD player would be relatively nice, but not required at all.

Well, that's it really.

The Modern Gaming Room

Dot-Com Gaming Room:

Start with the basement level of nearly any modern house. Add tough, spill-proof carpet. Add high-quality central air (to take care of those "ripe gamers".

Build a single-slab large wooden table, with elbow room for up to eight along the sides. Everyone gets an Aeron chair from a dot-com auction.

Purchase 8 touchscreen, WinCE capable tablets (ePods are a good start). Add wireless networking, and external keyboard support. Tie them together for dice-rolling, private messages, and drawings. Set up a large plasma display on the wall to shunt output if necessary (your roll of "1" on the saving throw is visible to all).

The back-end is a modest linux server, tied to ISDN or better and an 802.11 wireless router to serve the tablets. Also provides DHCP for visiting laptops.

For entertainment, DVD, CD, and MP3 players are tied into surround-sound and the plasma display (everyone can take a break to watch Anime, LoTR, etc.). Kitchen amenities include stainless steel chest freezer, stainless steel refrigerator, microwave, stove, and a DISHWASHER.

Most of the rulebooks are scanned in and accessible via PDF or TXT on the tablets. A search-capable database of the books would be even better.

wow that's a gaming room of the future. Well sort of, the almost now. I love the idea of secret im the dm. Passing notes always alerts the party that you are up to something. I think that pdf format for all rule books is a great idea.

My perfect game room would look something like this:

A large conference table (aprox 8 people) with large comfortable swivel chairs.
Each seat would have a cup holder and the afor mentioned access to im and all rulebooks and supplements on digital format.

the table would also have a built in mat system for minis. If you go real high tech you could have digital minis with programmed movement and range of spells etc... that would be great. Touch your character and where you want to go and they move! Fireball this area. would make games run much smoother. The dm could load up dungeons in the table (no need to map!)

I would also add a dry erase board for the Dm for various illustrations he might need to make. Ok the place looks like this.

Most of my suggestions have already been posted, but here's a couple more:

- Big white board w/ erasable markers behind the DM

and

- I'd probably spend some coin on decent lighting: at a minimum I'd have dimmer switches, but ideally I'd have programmable settings for different purposes. Can't stand to play under flourescent lights.
