Ultimate RPG room

Hm. Great ideas all around...

The table would be the most important element of the room. I've looked at the ultimate gaming table, and I don't think I'd want something as complicated. What I would look for is a table that could accomodate about 6 people total (room for more if we squeeze a little), with an integrated dyr-erase mini 1" grid that can easily be reached from anywhere you sit at the table. The mini board should be more than 2' by 3'. There should be space to put character sheets, and storage space for various books the players may bring.

The DM's place should be equipped with a computer and behind the DM there should be shelves with the proper reference books.

A sound system, fridge, microwave and bathroom would be nice, but aren't mandatory.

I always thought the ultimate gaming table would have a glass or plastic cover with inchwide grid lines, and benieth that a tv, or flatscreen, upon which I could upload an easily changeable map. That way when the characters collapse the ceiling, or the orcs push the tables over, i dont have to erase all my lines and scribble something new on. I can just change the map and re upload it.

Dot-Com Gaming Room:

Start with the basement level of nearly any modern house. Add tough, spill-proof carpet. Add high-quality central air (to take care of those "ripe gamers".

Build a single-slab large wooden table, with elbow room for up to eight along the sides. Everyone gets an Aeron chair from a dot-com auction.

Purchase 8 touchscreen, WinCE capable tablets (ePods are a good start). Add wireless networking, and external keyboard support. Tie them together for dice-rolling, private messages, and drawings. Set up a large plasma display on the wall to shunt output if necessary (your roll of "1" on the saving throw is visible to all).

The back-end is a modest linux server, tied to ISDN or better and an 802.11 wireless router to serve the tablets. Also provides DHCP for visiting laptops.

For entertainment, DVD, CD, and MP3 players are tied into surround-sound and the plasma display (everyone can take a break to watch Anime, LoTR, etc.). Kitchen amenities include stainless steel chest freezer, stainless steel refrigerator, microwave, stove, and a DISHWASHER.

Most of the rulebooks are scanned in and accessible via PDF or TXT on the tablets. A search-capable database of the books would be even better.

Add a bathroom to that, and your in the ballpark.

Interesting how many of you would include a computer. I have access to one in the game room, but I never use it.

I like the idea of a sectional board built in 2-foot by 2-foot sections with city scapes, villages, and other outdoor scenes. Having built them for wargames in the past, however, I know how much room they take up.

Lets see....

20x20 room would be fine. An oval hardwood table. 7 comfy chairs. A large wood bookcase. A wooden desk with a roll-away top I could put my laptop on. A cheap chandelier... oh yes. And the walls would all be covered in that fake stone panneling you can put on the outside of a house.

Ooo! And some of those halloween novelty props that look like a hanging cauldron with flames in them, one at each corner of the room.

Y'know on sci-fi movies in the "secret war room (tm)" or to a lesser extent on the show ER when they have the big glass board they draw on with chalk or something....One of those would be cool.

The perfect gaming space must have:
- Couches for everyone
- A big tactical table
- Lots of maps
- A projection system or high resolution giant monitor linked to the DM's computer
- Large showcase for minis
- Another projection system pointed down at the gaming table for transient effects ("Fireball at square AA-41!")
- Networked computers for everyone
- A pizza oven
