I find myself in the position of owning most of the WotC 5E adventures except for Curse of Stahd. We tried playing HotDS/PotA but it is unlikely we will ever get around to completing them. HotDQ in particular has some really appealing part but I think I may be able to salvage some of the chapters if I change some of the fluff and use each chapter as a stand alone adventure (tweaked). I can also mix and match with things like the quests of doom adventures.
Now for the brainstorming part I normally am conservative to an extent in what races I allow into my games. I normally allow no Drow or animal type humanoids (Gnolls, Rakasta etc) in my games. If a race was not in AD&D/3.5 PHB I usually do not allow it. Every now and then I run a themed game such as evil campaign, Drow campaign etc. I also always wanted to run a 2E stone age type game but never got around to it.
So for my next game I want to do a Dragon themed campaign making heavy use of the NPCs from HotDQ set in sort of a dark age Europe game (circa 8th century) and some of the better armors may not be available. I am thinking the barbarians will be Dragonborn/Dragonkin and the campaign will start near the ruins of a run down fantasy Rome under occupation of the Dragonmen and it is very run down.
ANy ideas on how to break up HotDQ into smaller chunks and mix it up with other adventures while crafting a semi coherent plot?
