SagaBorn Creature Compendium
SagaBorn
Undead, Undead Monster, Undead Creature: Undead are creatures who were once dead, but have been re-animated through supernatural or magical means — they are neither dead nor living.
A character with negative levels at least equal to their current level, or drained below 1st level, is instantly slain. Depending on the creature that killed them, they may rise the next night as a monster of that kind. If not, they rise as a wight.
Ghoul: It is believed the first ghouls came from cannibalistic humanoids, who carried their hunger for human flesh into death.
Lich: Liches are undead mages, who, through unspeakable rituals and necromantic magic, have extended their life beyond the natural.
A crucial part of extending one’s life as a lich is creating a magic phylactery to contain its life force.
Abravian Devolos, Lich of the Wastes, Lich Luminar 8/Undead 1: Abravian was a powerful luminar who left the Tower to search for more power in the Wastelands of the South. There he died, but not before he completed the ritual to return as a lich.
Mummy: A mummy is an undead creature who went through a lengthy embalming process and was then resurrected for nefarious reasons. They are often used as guardians of ancient tombs, though some texts mention mummies who rose from their tombs by sheer force of will.
Ravenous Corpse, Daevar: A “daevar” (the elven name for a ravenous corpse) is a long-dead corpse possessed by a spirit from the In-Between.
Skeleton, Bog-Standard Skeleton: An unintelligent undead spirit inhabits the skeleton of a fallen creature. Sometimes they can be the servant of a dark mage, but they have also been known rise on their own for reasons unknown... another sign of the strange times we live in. —Etahn
Skeleton Eldar: When a spirit inhabits a skeleton of an Eldar, they are more powerful than your bog-standard skeleton. Some part of the magical power of the Eldar must still reside in the bones of these ancient beings, which makes them even more dangerous.
Upir: An upir can feed upon a victim and through an arcane ritual turn its victim into an upir. The ritual must be performed at night, with the victim unconscious and drained of life (below 0 HP, but before true death at -10). The upir then gives part of his essence (and sometimes his own undead blood) to raise the victim. Afterwards the victim is wracked with hunger, and once they feed on another living, they become upir.
Wight: Wights were people once, but by some curse or malady have become walking corpses.
Any humanoid slain by a wight becomes a wight in 1d4 rounds.
A character with negative levels at least equal to their current level, or drained below 1st level, is instantly slain. Depending on the creature that killed them, they may rise the next night as a monster of that kind. If not, they rise as a wight.
Zombie: We haven’t yet discovered the cause of the zombie’s condition. Is it animated by dark magic, or by some infiltration of force from the Navirim? Has a malignant parasite taken residence in the rotting flesh?
If a beh’ul’s vessel is killed while it is possessed, the beh’ul is expelled, but the body of the slain returns to life as a zombie with the hit points and Base Attack it had as the possessed beh’ul.

Chatterjaws, Chatterbones: Most often, they wait months or years before returning, but I’ve heard cases where they didn’t last the night.
While anyone can become a Chatterbones, it seems that murder victims come back most often.
Ghost, Spirit: Bodies fade quickly after death, but sometimes the spirit doesn’t quite get the message. More often than not, spirits that stick around in this way have some pressing goal-to incriminate their murderer, to find a certain artifact, to warn others who might die in a similar fashion. Other times they simply stick around as if they are unsure how to leave. If there is a goal, the ghost often fades after the task has been completed (except in the case of those who serve as a warning against some perpetual danger).
Ghosts tend to be rooted to one place, often one that has special significance to the departed. Sometimes it’s the place they died, but it can also be where they are buried, a house they grew up in, or a boat they once traveled on. Other ghosts are not rooted, and can travel freely. I’ve yet to discover a consistent cause to reliably predict this behavior.
Haunt: Haunts aren’t ghosts. They aren’t lost souls, waiting to be put to rest. Haunts are murderers in life who didn’t quite get their fill in death.
Skeleton, Full Skeleton: I see it all the time, whenever bodies aren’t buried quite right. Sometimes there isn’t enough reverence given to the corpse, enough tears shed, some ritual overlooked. Other times it seems the body simply wasn’t ready to die. No matter the cause, the outcome is the same: A decaying corpse, with no muscle left to direct its bones, crawls out of the ground and wanders about. Sometimes it takes weeks. Other times years.
But the skeletons. It’s usually just people who come back like this, but I’ve seen it happen to a pet.
Thaco: I thought it was a man walking. I’ve never been so wrong. The thaco is a curiously unique creature. I know not if it is a ghost possessing abandoned armor, a fallen fighting spirit that hasn’t realized its body has gone, or if simply the armor itself has come to life.
Vampire: ?
Vampire Lord: ?
Vampire Underling: ?
Zombie, Shambler, Living Dead: There’s always a cause.
Sometimes it’s a talisman. I’ve also seen a plague, an angry priest, an unsealed tomb... the cause isn’t important. What’s important is the effect: recently dead rising up (usually in a localized area, thank all that is good!) and feasting upon the flesh of their own.

Ghoul Ghast: ?
Ghoul Lacedon: ?
Lich Adept 11: A lich is an adept who has used his supernatural powers to unnaturally extend his life.
The process of becoming a lich is unspeakably evil and must be willingly undertaken.
An integral part of becoming a lich is creating a phylactery in which the adept stores its life force.
Each lich must make a phylactery, which requires the Imbue Item feat. The character must be able to use supernatural powers and have an adept level of 11th or higher.
The most common form of phylactery is a sealed metal box containing strips of parchment on which magical phrases have been transcribed. The box is Tiny and has +8 toughness, damage reduction 8/—, and a break Difficulty of 40.
Other forms of phylacteries can exist, such as rings, amulets or similar items
Mummy: Mummies are preserved corpses animated through the auspices of dark desert gods best forgotten.
Shadow Human Warrior 3: Any humanoid reduced to Strength –5 by a shadow dies and becomes a shadow in 3 rounds.
These creatures are spirits of the dead which have come back to haunt the living in the form of an independently animated un-living shadow
Spectre Human Warrior 7: Any humanoid slain by the chilling touch of a spectre becomes a spectre in 3 rounds.
Wight: Any humanoid slain by a wight becomes a wight in 3 rounds
A wight is a corpse that has been reanimated by a powerful evil spirit.

Apparition: For example, if someone dies and becomes a ghost, you can apply the apparition template.
Apparitions are the spectral remnants of intelligent beings who, for one reason or another, cannot remain at rest.
A creature killed by the apparition’s natural attacks rises from the dead as an apparition of the same type within 3 rounds.
“Apparition” is an acquired template that can be added to any aberration, animal, humanoid, monstrous humanoid, plant or supernatural beast. The base creature must have a Charisma of at least –2.
Apparition Allip, Spectral Remains of Someone Driven to Suicide by a Madness That Afflicted it in Life: An allip is the spectral remains of someone driven to suicide by a madness that afflicted it in life.
Apparition Ghost: For example, if someone dies and becomes a ghost, you can apply the apparition template.

Apparition Spectre: ?
Apparition Wraith: ?
Lich: Liches are adepts who have used their supernatural powers to extend their existence by becoming undead.
“Lich” is an acquired template that can be added to any humanoid creature (referred to hereafter as the base creature), provided it can create the required phylactery
An integral part of becoming a lich is creating a phylactery in which the adept stores his life force.
Each lich must make its own phylactery, which requires the Imbue Item feat and the Imbue Unlife supernatural power. The would-be lich must also have an adept level of 11th or higher. The phylactery has a purchase Difficulty of 35 to make and a level equal to its creator at the time of creation. A phylactery can be any small item, typically a ring, amulet, circlet or the like. It has hardness 16, regardless of composition.
Skeleton: “Skeleton” is an acquired template added to any living, corporeal creature with a skeletal system.
Vampire: If a vampire kills a victim with blood drain (i.e. reduces the victim’s Constitution to –5), the victim returns as a vampire in three days.
“Vampire” is an acquired template that can be added to any humanoid or monstrous humanoid creature.
Zombie: Zombies are corpses animated through dark supernatural powers.
“Zombie” is a template added to any living creature with a physical body.
If the base creature has more than 10 creature levels, it can’t be made into a zombie.
If a hellwasp swarm inhabits a dead body, it can restore animation to the creature and control its movements, effectively transforming it into a zombie of the appropriate size for as long as the swarm remains inside.

True20 Adept's Handbook
True20
Undead, Undead Creature: Necromancy began as a form of divination seeking to communicate with the spirits of the deceased. Since its inception, this supernatural tradition has been influenced by the darker arts such as diabolism, and it has been expanded to include the actual summoning of unliving spirits and the creation of the undead.
Undead Monstrosity: Today, necromancy is one of the most feared supernatural traditions, as it is responsible for a wide array of undead monstrosities that now roam the world.

Rite of the Bloodstained Altar
This rite is a blasphemous perversion of the Rite of the Candle-Lit Altar. In this ritual, a necromancer establishes a black altar in a graveyard and sacrifices a bound and helpless person or large animal, while intoning the Rite of the Candle-Lit Altar backward. After an hour of this, the corpses of the dead around the altar animate and claw their way to the surface to obey the necromancer.

Undead: As the rulers grew desperate and their armies depleted, they instructed their magicians to call upon preternatural forces for help. As a result, scorching magics added to the devastation. Amidst this chaos, new gods touched the minds of futilely praying priests. Thankful that their prayers were finally answered, the empowered priests created undead armies from fallen soldiers and summoned fearsome creatures from the abyss to change the tide of battle.
