Underdark Overview, aka Return of Drow Weaponry

So you can wield that drow sword for a short while, until you return to the surface. The drow, on the other hand, can use it all the time. So unless this is a campaign that completely takes place in the Underdark, you don't get as much out of this item as the drow does. And not before this particular item is intelligent and only accepts evil drow wielders (something that should be rather rare) but because it doesn't work upstairs - where you are most of the time.

I get it. :)

I can see where this can get lopsided, ruleswise.

I've always liked the drow weapon desintigrating thing for the "other worldly" quality it brings to them. I've always thougt it was the taint of evil, forged in the underdark type thing that wouldn't let them survive in the light of day. Much like the drow themselves.

Of course some drow are moving to the surface so...What could be interesting, if you wish to keep the rule is a way of working the taint of the weapon out so that it would not go *poof* once you get to the surface. Perhaps a wish or miracle, or even remove curse. Make the Drow do this too.

This is a good idea.

Actually, it has been done in a novel, more or less - and Realmswide no less.

A lot of things weren't invented to do negative things, but they were later used to that end. And if they're bad, they should not be allowed anymore, even if the original intentions were good.

It gave a nice flavor the already mysterious Drow, at least they were mysterious before all the Drizzt cra...stuff. Of course it conflicts with the 3.xe mantra of Balance trumps all, good ideas and flavor be dammned!

Only that this is not a good idea. Otherwise, I'm all for good ideas and flavour, unless they make more trouble than they contribute.

Which one?

I need to start reading those things again.

The "ritual" itself was done in Starlight & Shadows Book 2 - Tangled Webs. But the consequences themselves were discovered in Book 3 - Windwalker. The books are by Elaine Cunningham.

I've never had a party whine about not getting "what they have coming to them according to the rules" after defeating drow. So far they have fought two, and barely won the battles. They talked about it and how a single dice roll could have turned fate against either party and how it was fun. Do people in some groups break out the calculator and calculate how much they have coming?

Player - "Well He's CR8 and according to this I have XX,XXX gp in lewt coming and I figure what I have is short 6k gp. Why are you screwing me?"

Me - "I think you need to find a new game, take care!"
