Unearthed Arcana *hugs her copy*

After about 2 months of waiting and saving the gift certificate to my FLGS I got for Christmas, I have finally picked up Unearthed Arcana, and I love it! The next time I run a d20 game, I'm definitely using some of the options in this book. Among them are:
  • Generic classes
  • Defense bonus
  • Armor as DR
  • Item familiars

Things I'm considering using (though not all at once) are:
  • Racial paragon classes
  • Character traits and flaws
  • Action points
  • Bell curve rolls
  • Magic rating
  • Spontaneous metamagic
  • Spell points as the primary method of spontaneousspellcasting
  • Incantations as the primary method of prepared spellcasting

What about you? What do your "must use" and "might use" lists look like?

Well, I got my copy sunday afternoon, and started using it in my game right away the same night. What I use, or will allow in my games:

(let me check my notes)

Stuff we already used
Stuff I'm really excited about

Paladin Variants
Battle Sorceror
Domain Wizard
Spontaneous Divine Casters
Whirling Frenzy
Character Traits
Character Flaws
Craft Points
Players Roll All the Dice
Metamagic Components
Level-Independent X.P. Awards

Yup. Great book. There's also some very nice synergies between that book and BoED and CW. For example:

Battle Sorceror (UA) with one level of cleric (PHB) with Scimitar
Divine Might (CW)
Arcane Strike (CW)
Resounding Blow (BoED)

That's a nice combo right there.

My "must use" sections right now are Racial Paragon Classes, Metamagic components, and Magic Rating, as my campaign is already in full swing and I don't want to change things too much.

Other bits we may slide in are Traits/Flaws, variant classes, and Spontanious Metamagic II - although the latter isn't that big of a deal with the lack of sorcerers or bards in my group.

I'll admit I like the idea of the legendary weapons, but don't know if I want to include one.

What I don't like about it is the investment it demands on your character levels. A better option (IMHO) is the Ancestral Relic general feat from BoED.

Now we just need a kobold paragon class ... OK, maybe only I need that.

I got mine this afternoon and there is so much to go through. I really sorta like the Craft Points but I don't like the need to take feats to make MW items or alchemy.

I like the bloodlines as well but I'm not sure if the loss of 1-3 levels is worth it. (I think they might be overpowered). But I've mostly just skimmed so far.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with it so far.

I love and want to use the injury rules and the generics (despite my rant in the Rules forum on the expert getting la shaft, which I will fix by adding 2 skill points/lvl and allowing all skills as class skills for it). The battle sorceror is cool too. But right away, I can't use that and just have the generics. So much to use! The racial paragons are interesting, but maybe more for NPC's. I dunno. Although a half-orc paragon that then takes orc paragon is going to get plenty strong, plenty quick! I did notice, with amusement, that the "Spot" skill was mostly a class skill for "monster" paragons, rather than "good guy core 7 races" paragons. I guess Spot is EEEEEEEEvil. :)

What I really like about UA is that it encourages me to look at what is there and go a step further. It is like having permission to use house rules, rather than stay by ye holy core books. Maybe that is just me. :) Mabye it is the next step in evolution in ogl. Open Source Code encourages this. Maybe UA will encourage even more rules variations that get submitted to Dragon or published in other d20 compendiums of alternate rules, etc.

All in all, money well spent.

Just curious, think maybe there should be a Paragon Asaatthi Pr-class? ;) Oh wait we do have that! ;)
