Unearthed Arcana semi-officially confirmed

...and yes I will more than likely pick up Unearthed Arcana, but it's still a money grab! Man what a vicious cycle! Psychology profs would have a field day writing about this addiction.

Heaven forbid that a game publishing company would publish BOOKS!!!

and welcome to the boards! ;)

I'm getting tired of all of this demonizing of WotC going on lately.

If there is demonizing of WotC lately, then maybe you should step back and take an analysis of the situation. But, before you "try" to lable "real life", try and understand it from a consumers perspective and then as a gamer who has grown with the game. I've gotten over "It", just spitting out an opinion... like everyone else. Maybe its frustration over the idea of having to spend that much more coin for a favored hobby, when the coffers are low.

No demonizing of the "game" or "WotC" was intended, so ease up!

I am impressed with 3.5 Ed, and appreciate effort and the work WotC puts into keeping the "game" alive. Kudos! Especially in having soo many lay offs, meaning more work for those left.

...and yes, surprised that another "rules" book would come out from a producer of such... not! Just "surprised" at the concept of an Unearthed Arcana coming out so soon after the release of the 3.5 Edition. That's all. Thanks for the invite.

Trying to caputure the feelings of the ways the old first edition did it for so many of doesn't really work all the time. New awesome game experiences is where it's at, title the book Arcana Scripture or something of the like, after all, the "Arcana" has already been "Unearthed". ;-) If a nastalgic approach to keep us "old timers" interested is sought, try revising some of the old modules, like they did for 2nd Ed AD&D. What ever happened to that crashed space craft in the Barrier Peaks?

Thanks.

Sorry. I was a bit harsh at first. Just kind of a bit edgy with all of the discussions lately. :)
I do see your point though. Its just that we have no idea WHAT is in Unearthed Arcana yet...so its probably best to sit back and wait and see.

I would find it truly astonishing if they were to release something with a name so similar to Monte's product. If the agreement was made for Monte to use the name he has (Arcana Unearthed), then for them to pick up and use an old name which can be so easily mistaken seems bad. I'd not have thought it would even be legal.

Watches with interest.

Well, it's the other way around... I mean they had the name first. Monte Cook asked if it was okay to use it, they said okay. Perhaps they didn't intend to use it at that time, perhaps they did. (Given the use of so many old titles, I wouldn't doubt if it was planned somewhere along the lines.)

So, I can't see Wizards getting in trouble for naming their product after an old product, regardless of whether there is another product out there.

I'm pretty sure that I saw something when the first hints of this came out where Monte (either here on his boards) said that they told him that they would be making a UA book when he asked about AU.

Wait and see? Where's the fun in that?

Let's see, BOVD, D&D Minis, BOEF, D&D 3.5, D&D at Walmart...

Nope, none of them has caused my FLGS to burn down. No mad mothers with pitchforks in my driveway. My 2 shelves of D&D goodness hasn't spontaneously faded into the ether. Haven't grown any hair on my palms. Lack of fruition of earlier endless rants hasn't stopped later endless rants.

Guess the batgnomes will have to add a few more letters to their resumes soon :)

The question I'd want to know the answer to is:
Now that Dragon and Dungeon are owned by different companies how do you think that they're going to get the rights to what's in the mags?

I tend to doubt that they'd do that without talking to Paizo first. And if they have then I expect it would be a bit of a departure (if a welcome one) for everyone's favorite publishing house.

Just because Piazo publishers Dragon and Dungeon doesn't necessarily mean that they own the material. They're an "official" source so WoTC probably has final say over the content.

Paizo is publishing the magazines under a license, the Dragon and Dungeon trademarks are still owned by WoTC, and it still says "©2002 Wizards of the Coast, Inc." on the contents page.

I am getting a bit tired of the reuse of 1e names. From a name recognition stand point, it makes perfect sense, Oriental Adventures was just that, so why not call it by an already established name. However a little voice inside of me whispers every now and then, "reusing the names is indicative of a lack of creativity, and WOTC is following a repackage, reprint plan".

I wouldnt mind some completely new material comming from the pens of wotc r&d.
