Death By Flail

Last year though after a long week of work and other things during the game I forgot what a flail was.
You're kidding, right?

[T]here is a DM to help the players out when they need it. You are either for the players and willing to give them the benifit of the doubt; or you are against them and not willing to give them any slack.
Talk about black-and-white; I have no problem giving PCs the benefit of the doubt, but it is not my responsbility to play their characters for them.

And I think we're back to back-patting now (non-jokingly), rather than serious criticism of what may have been the DM's mistakes.

It's yet to be established that he made any. He started this thread because he was afraid that he had and wanted to see what other people thought.

Is the player blameless? No.

Is the DM? Based on this thread, also no.

You must be reading a different thread to the one I've been reading, then. The DM's actions were entirely reasonable and appropriate, and he's been considerably more conciliatory towards the player than I would have been ....

...hand him some d6's. Start rolling that new character bub. D&D is like the game of life sometimes. Sh*t happens and then you die.

Good advice. :)

no, people make mistakes. Things get forgotten, we are only human as the saying goes. It is possible to have other things on ones mind and not be totally concentrated on the game at hand[/quote]

And no one said you should oddly enough.

But don't worry about it, I'm sure being in the right is more important then a friendship.

Assumptions Are Not Evil

Assumption The mother of all...
Yes, actually ... we all have to use them to think creatively. Mine was entirely reasonable.

So this guy was a new player? Cause at least one of your players didn't know.
He was a veteran player; I might have felt bad about snuffing a newbie.

It might seem so easy when you have all the answers because you’re behind the screen...
Accusations of tyranny? Nice ....

Well, either the player missed the obvious or the DM failed to give the player enough info. Since we only have the DM's point of view we really have no idea what really happened. So, it has not been stablished that the DM made no mistake either.

2. He assumed it was some non-specific spell effect that could not be tampered with. There is no such thing in the game (all ward spells have Search/Disable DCs).

Well ...

Mirror of Mental Prowess: This mirror resembles an ordinary looking glass 5 feet tall by 2 feet wide. The possessor who knows the proper commands can cause it to perform as follows.

• Read the thoughts of any creature reflected therein, as long as the owner is within 25 feet of the mirror, even if those thoughts are in an unknown language.

• View other places as if with clairvoyance, but vision extends even onto other planes if the viewer is sufficiently familiar with them.

• Use it as a portal to visit other places. The user first views the place with the clairvoyance function, then steps through the mirror to the place pictured. Others can follow her through the mirror if they like. An invisible portal remains on the other side where she arrives, and she can return through that portal. Once she returns, the portal closes. The portal closes on its own after 24 hours (trapping the user if she’s still in the other place), and the user can also close it with a command word. Creatures with Intelligence of 12 or higher might notice the portal just as they might notice a magical sensor from a scrying spell. Any creature who steps through the portal appears in front of the mirror.

• Once per week the mirror accurately answers one short question regarding a creature whose image is shown on its surface (giving answers similar to those from the legend lore spell).

Strong conjuration and divination; CL 17th; Craft Wondrous Item, detect thoughts, clairaudience/clairvoyance, gate, legend lore; Price 175,000 gp; Weight 40 lb.

Ring Gates: These always come in pairs—two iron rings, each about 18 inches in diameter. The rings must be on the same plane of existence and within 100 miles of each other to function. Whatever is put through one ring comes out the other, and up to 100 pounds of material can be transferred each day. (Objects only partially pushed through and then retracted do not count.) This useful device allows for instantaneous transport of items or messages, and even attacks. A character can reach through to grab things near the other ring, or even stab a weapon through if so desired. Alternatively, a character could stick his head through to look around. A spellcaster could even cast a spell through a ring gate. A Small character can make a DC 13 Escape Artist check to slip through. Creatures of Tiny, Diminutive, or Fine size can pass through easily. Each ring has a “entry side” and an “exit side,” both marked with appropriate symbols.

Strong conjuration; CL 17th; Craft Wondrous Item, gate; Price 40,000 gp;Weight 1 lb. each.

Well, I'm glad I don't play with you, then. :)

As was probaly his "If my character would know I'm sure the DM would tell me."

Might... nice. ;) Well then you have a room for of veteran players that let one of them make a horrendous mistake? (I've not read the whole thread. Just the initial post or two as I didn’t realize you where so active in the thread but did the other players caution him of his character’s actions?)

I think not, I do know that the DM in that position would know more than the player, I mean how can the DM not, so I think your perspective is well corrupted by your inability/lack of desire to see it from the players perspective.

No, but I will not have someone question my integrity. I am an honest person and I do not deserve to be maligned for something I did not do.

Besides, caving is not friendship ... self-degradation is not a sign of loyalty.

I already admitted to him that I could have been more detailed, but I will not apologize for killing his character when it was not my fault.
